Birth from the womb of a Dragon's maw
And borne unto the stars
By light and darkness cast aloft
Are dreamtide oaths resworn
Moon is swathed in ever-light
Ne-er again to know eclipse
Earth, with hallow'd bounty reconciled

Cecil Harvey
Special Ability: Darkness
Adopted son of Baron's King, Cecil leads the Red Wings, the airships, as Lord Captain. Cecil becomes the focus of a powerful struggle as he questions his own loyalty to baron and his liege. How much longer can he fight the darknesss enveloping his sword as the armor encases his body?

Kain Highwind
Special Ability: Jump
Also adopted to the king, Kain is the Commander of the elite legion of Dragoons. Both a friend and a foe at times, to Cecil, Kain struggles with his own inner doubt.

Rosa Farrell
Special ability: Aim, Pray, White Mage
A friend of both Kain and Cecil, the white mage Rosa forms that critical point that leads to a triangle, intertwining the fates of the two friends into a complicated feud.

Rydia of Myst [b]
Rydia of Myst is one of the few alive in the world with the power to summon the ancient creatures known as Eidolons. She also has an array of magics, both black and white.

[b]Edward the Bard

Secretly of the royal blood, Edward abandoned his life as prince to travel the lands. His voice is like birdsong, bringing him in contact with the beautiful Anna.

Yang of Fabul
Focused in both mind and body, the young monk of Fabul is a force to be reckoned with. Yang is the protector of Fabul, and it's leader in martial arts, a sentinenl both strong and king.

Palom, Black Mage [b/]
Palom is a truly talented mage, and he knows it and shows it whenever he gets the chance. Brash of tone, this young mage can cast powerful spells, both alone and with the aide of his twin.

[b]Porom, White Mage

As unlike her brother as day is to night, Porom is the epitome of discipline and politeness. She oftens has to keep her brother in line, even as she combines her magics with him to produce some truly devasting affects on the battlfield.

Prince Edge
How Edge manages to slay his oponents with such masterful ease is to the wonderment of everyone but him. The prince has little attention to his battle skills, spending more of his time trying woo the women around him.

More to come!

Ooooh, this will be fun.

Did you write all those yourself?

That's right. It's not that difficult to write since I have a decent understanding of the characters backgrounds. I'm gonna add more when I get home tonight.

Rather nice character descriptions there Dawny and nice starting with the Mysidian legend.

I look forward to seeing this playout.

Thanks, guys.

Our story starts out with Cecil, Captain of the Red Wings, reminsicing on his airship. Cecil is fraught with doubt as he recalls the attack he did upon the Mysidian city and its people in his quest to capture the Water Crystal. One of four crystals of life, the dark knight was ordered to claim it for his king.

I do have to say the graphics are truly stunning, a vast improvement when it comes to the realism, over the previous incarnations of this game.

But as his soliders vocally oppose the idea, Cecil too wonders of his actions are the right ones. There is no time to contemplate however, as they are attacked. Cecil expertly defeats the monster, two winged creatures, and shortly thereafter they land by Baron, the capital city and Cecil's hometown.

Reporting to the Captain of the Guards, Baigan, the dark knight exppresses his misgivings but is rebuffed. As instructed to, Cecil hands the crystal over to Baigan who gives it in turn to the king. As the dark knight is dismissed, he turns to go, but then swirls around and questions the morality of their orders and actions.

Cecil is quickly stripped of his command, and ordered to deliver a mysterious "ring" to the town of Myst. It is his only hope of reclaiming his good standing with the king. Kain, his friend and leader of the Dragoons, comes to his defense and is similiarly charged with the task.

Kind of strange task, no?

Subsequently, both men are thrown from the throneroom.

The task does not sit right with Cecil who expresses his frustration and his apology with Kain. The dragoon tries to cheer him up, but the dark knight leaves still cast in doubt.

Later Cecil comes upon Rosa, the white mage, as he walking to his tower. He agrees to see her later. He also happens upon Cid, the airship engineer, who shares Cecil's concerns about the direction the king is taking as of late. Since the hour is also midnight, the dark knight retires to his bed, but he cannot sleep.

I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate how they pronounce his name in this game, btw.

Later that Rosa appears at his door, as promised. Cecil tries to talk to her about his problems but finds himself unable, ashamed of what he'd done. But Rosa is willful and pulls it out of him, chidding him when he wallows in self-pity. Cecil longs to be the sort of person she can believe in, but how can he if he cannot believe in himself?

Rosa leaves shortly thereafter, but sleep does not come.

The next morning, Cecil and Kain leave the castle together, neither of them aware of how far-reaching and destiny-shaping their actions will be.

Why'd they change the opening poem? oO

Kain and Cecil travel across the land, slaying everything in its path with the efficiency afforded two skilled, experienced warriors. The goblins are no match for their strength. They arrive at a cavern in short order, entering it and continuing to defeat everything in their path. As they go, they hear a voice warning them away. Undeterred they march forth, intent on reaching the town Myst.

Easy, easy dungeons….they don’t stay that way I bet….

As they near the end, a great mist envelopes them, and a dragon attacks. Cecil and Kain combat the creature, suffering the slash of a maelstrom when they attempt to fight it while it’s in its mist form. Learning from their mistake, Kain and Cecil combine their efforts to take down the beast, freeing their path to the outside.

The rest of the way to Myst is uneventful. The same cannot be said once they set foot in the town. The ring Cecil bears unleashes a host of flaming beasts that consume the town in a fiery blaze. Distraught, the dark knight and dragoon question their reasons for being there. As they talk, they hear the sound of sobbing.

Rydia’s design is really amazing, IMO

Near a small pond is the body of a woman and weeping over it is a green-haired girl. When Cecil and Kain hear her mention the death of the woman is directly linked to the slaying of the dragon, they realize they killed her mother. Kain notes how this is the king’s desire, to slaughter the villagers, and steps forward to kill the girl. Cecil stops him, Kain asks for his loyalties, and the dark knight refuses to side with a king willing to do this.

After a moment of tension, the dragoon and the dark knight agree to renounce their loyalty to Baron and fight back. They try to take the girl with them, but she struggles, and in her rage and sorrow summons a huge titan. The resulting blow to the earth splits it in half and Cecil loses consciousness…

When Cecil awakens Kain’s no where to be found. The girl is not far away however, so the dark knight decides to grab her and head for the nearest town, that of Kaipo. Without Kain the battles are harder but still nothing is able to withstand the slash of his dark blade. Entering the town, the dark knight immediately brings her to the Inn, and the innkeeper generously offers him a room for her for free.

Not gonna complain about that!

Cecil knows his words are futile to atone for his many sins against the child but he apologizes anyways and set to sleep, though he knows, once again, he won’t have it.

In the end, his lack of sleep was a blessing for the dark knight heard the tromp of boots on the floor and sees soldiers in the Inn. The General realizes he’s awake and demands he hand over the girl. The sound awakens the girl who hides under the covers, frightened. Cecil refuses to do so and fights to keep them from her. Once he takes down the two soldiers, the General cowardly teleports away.

Here I could have fought the General first and got the experience first, but I was too lazy and let him get away. xD

Thanking him for protecting her, the girl tells him her name is Rydia and agrees to join him on his quests.

Rydia was always one of my favourite Amano character designs.

I'm getting the impression this game presents the story in a much more epic fashion, thanks to the extra hardware oomph. That can only be a good thing.

The next morning, Cecil and Rydia explore the town, stocking up on items and armaments. After catching wind of gossip of a “sick white wizard” the dark knight follows the trail to a house at the east end. Inside, he is greeted with a mixture of joy and sorrow as he sees Rosa…bedridden.

A desert fever claimed her while travelling the desert for him, so the doctor explained. Only a sand ruby can bring her out of it. Swearing to return with it, Cecil leaves, determined to cure her, but unsure how. He heads outside with Rydia in the direction of Damcyan, as it was reported that there they might find such a healing gem.

How does a jewel heal diseases? oO

Rydia is young and inexperienced with combat, but her magic is fearsome so Cecil guards her in the battles, letting her unleash her spells upon the monsters as they diverts their attacks with his blade. Together they make it a network of caves, and encounter a sage called Tellah.

Who doesn’t love Tellah?

Tellah explains how he is trying to fetch back his daughter, Anna, from the bard, Edward. Unfortunately, a water beast stands in his way. The three decide to journey together, camping briefly in the caverns, and making it out into another cave, finding the beast he mentioned blocking their path out.

Hacking away at the tentacles trying to ensnare him, the dark knight leaves the two spell casters to their magical work, keeping the beast focused on him. Lightning from Tellah’s fingertips burns it, while Rydia’s healing saves the team from falling to it. After a time it is destroyed, and the three leave the caverns for the light of the overworld again.

I never found that boss particularly difficult, even now.

Barely a dozen feet from the castle, the three are treated to the horrendous sight of Damcyan assaulted by the Red Wings. The sight inside the castle is worse. All around are the bodies of the dead and the dying. There’s nothing to be done for any of them. The three dodge the flames and debris as they ascend the stairs to the upper levels.

Entering the throne room, Tellah lets out a cry. It is his dear daughter, Anna, lying still on the floor. And there is a blond young man who the sage immediately sets upon, calling him all manner of names and striking at him. Cecil and Rydia call at the sage to stop but Tellah only ceases when Anna calls out his name.

Sadly spoony bard wasn’t spoken, but it’s still in there <3

Both Edward and Tellah run back to her body. Anna says a few parting words, and between her and Edward they explain the story. Edward is the prince, hiding his royalty to be with her. Goblez and the Red Wings stole the crystal and killed Edward’s parents, and Anna shielded Edward from arrows with her own body.

Enraged, the sage leaves to find revenge on Goblez, deserting the party. Edward moans over Anna’s body but doesn’t for long for Rydia chides him his lack of action. Cecil then grabs and shakes him, pleading for his help. The prince agrees to help them locate the sand ruby, found from the nest of an Antlion.

Is it just me or is Cecil and Rydia rather insensitive to poor Edward's grief?

Cecil and Rydia run off and after biding farewell to Anna, so does Edward.

It doesn’t take long for Cecil to realize that Edward is little use as a fighter. However the bard-prince’s songs are useful against the monsters and his ability to serve as a healer of sorts fairly useful. At the prince’s direction they use a hovercraft to ferry across the shallows to the Antlion’s cave.

The developers obviously realized that that Edward was, to put it bluntly, a wimp, and thus gave him selectable, working songs and the salve ability that can be used as a bit of healing spell.

The dark knight leads his team into the bowels of the beast’s lair, slaying everything in their way. Some of the pathways are confusing, causing them to backtrack, but with Edward’s guidance they find the deepest recess of the cavern, which housed the Antlion.

Rydia is scared by the monster, but the prince calms her, fearlessly going for the pearl. The beast is tame, he says. But he is wrong. Edward harrowingly misses being impaled by the creature’s sharp talons and is beset by it. Cecil and Rydia swiftly come to his aide.

At first the battle goes poorly for the three, with the beast seeming to be random in its counterattacks. However, the dark knight carefully monitored it and realized the key to its countering was in its eyes—it gave away what it would do next. With that, Cecil directed Rydia to summon when the eyes were white and struck with his blade when they were red. Meanwhile, Edward used his salve abilities to keep the party healthy.

They changed the battle from before. Before the only action you could take was to have Rydia summon or else be impaled by a needle counterstrike.

After slaying the Antlion, they take the sand ruby and leave the cavern for Kaipo.

Cecil and the others rushed back to Kaipo, determined to reach Rosa in time. Fortunately, they arrived before the healer perished, the light of the sand ruby killing the infection and bringing the life back into her. Cecil and Rosa were overjoyed to be reunited but the feeling was brief, as they came to realize the next target of Baron--Fabul's Wind Crystal.

At this point I must admit Rosa's skills come in quite handy. Though Rydia serves a good healer role, and Edward has some uses as well, it's Rosa's spells that really make the difference, particularly in the next dungeon.

Deciding to rest before climbing Mt. Hobbs, the group have a...eventful night. Or Edward does. Awaking after midnight while the others are still sleeping, the prince picks up his harp and goes out to the pond, strummming the strings for reassurance. There he plays a tune, not realizing what was coming from the shadows.

I was convinced Edward was gonna perish at this point, forcing me to go through the last bit of story again, but surprisingly he did quite well against the monster.

As Edward struggled with the Sahagin that tried to subude him for supper, he heard a familiar voice giving him courage. It was Anna! Anna's spirit encouraged him to survive, and to with her strength, Edward slayed the beast.

Sadly his love had but a few precious moments before leaving this world, doing so with parting words of love and support.

Edward was not troubled again that night nor any night after.

In the last few games I could arm Rydia with bows and arrows, giving her an attack power almost on par with Rosa's. However it seems only Rosa can use bows and arrows now so the weapons options are pretty limited. Rydia's power lay in her magic and summoning anyways...

With the hovercraft's swift speed across sand and shallows alike, the four arrive at Mt. Hobbs late afternoon, determined to scale the mountain that served as passage to Fabul. However, they encounter an unusual problem, one only one among their number could solve...

An inpenetrable wall of ice stood before them, and every attempts to going around the perimeter or over it failed. Only fire could destory it and only Rydia could cast such a spell. But the little girl balked, terrified, and Cecil explained why.

With the support of Rosa, however, the summoner overcame her fear. Gouts of flame from her fingers devoured the ice, allowing them to proceed. They did so without delay. Already the four could hear the sounds of battle high up on the mountain, and they longed to seek out the source.

This is where I found the game to be very very tough. The next boss battle is brutal and it wasn't until I actually paid attention properly that I managed to survive it.

Once at the apex of the mountain, they discover a monk of Fabul as he displayed his skills upon the monsters attempting to waylay him. Most of the monsters go down without much trouble, however the last and leader of the pack looks to be quite fearsome indeed. They hurry over to help him.

Oh my god. The Mom Bomb is really bad if you're not on the defensive. And I'm not that smart. It wasn't til after a few tries I realized I'm suppose to be blocking when blows up, reducing the damage in half (and leaving most of group alive). It's a hard boss anyways, but considering I had a decent team at that point (three "healers", one offensive magic-user, and two really tough fighters) being careful does the trick.

After defeating the last monster the monk, he calls himself Yang, thanks the group. They have the grim task of telling him the worst is yet to come--an attack on Fabul by Baron. It is agreed they will make haste to Fabul to defend it and hopefully prevent another crystal from falling into evil's hands.

There's little that bothers me out in the trek to Fabul. Between a decent inventory of tents and the power of the team, getting to Fabul isn't the problem. The fight inside, is.

Arriving at Fabul, the five are relieved to realize that unlike Damcyan, Fabul hadn't been assualted yet. They rush to see the king, eager to warn him of the danger. Seeing the dark knight, he is not so eager to respond favorably but between his lead monk's urgency and Edward's own verification of Cecil and the other's story, he changes his mind.

Rosa and Rydia are set off to medic duty while the three men prepare to do battle.

I've always hated that part. It leaves me with no offensive magic-user and virtually no healer, although Edward shines through in this. Without his salve and bardsong ability I'd dare say I woudln't have survived the upcoming fights.

Guarding the gates, the people of Fabul are beseiged by bombs from the Red Wings. Cecil is dismayed as he realizes the power of his former teammates and urges the fighters inside or end up slaughtered by the firepower.

Inside however proves a very brief respite, as the monsters pour into the castle like a firestorm, consuming all in their path. Cecil, Edward and Yang assist the monks in combating but they are forced further in by superior numbers. Again and again they make what they are determined the final blockade only to find it shattered, giving the monsters more ground, allowing them closer to the crystal...

Driven into the throneroom, one more door before the crystal, the three and a single monk are left to ponder Fabul's fate. The pounding on the door is ever stronger. Thankfully, the king and women and children are safely sequestered away from the battle.

Then the monk does something shocking and horrific--he opens the door to let the monsters in....and he himself is one of them!

I actually really liked this twist, tbh. I hadn't expected it at all!

Slaying monster after monster does no good, they realize, and so make their way to the crystal room, hoping to give their lives, if need be, to protect it. Once Edward had fallen, waving his companions on. But Yang and Cecil would not leave the prince to the mercy of the monsters, and so cut down more, before the three fled into the crystal room...

Inside the crystal room, the three men made their stand. Cecil thought himself prepared for anything that would go through those doors, but when the armored figure clutching a spear came through, he knew he was not.

Kain.

Such a wonderful twist here. I may have seen this scene a dozen times before, but that dosen't stop me from always being impressed here.

At first overjoyed Cecil rushed over to his friend, but the discourse that followed was not at all what he imagined. Kain struck him down, again and again, ignoring his pleas for mercy. Edward and Yang approached the dragoon, but they were too hard away to stop the spear aiming for his chest...

Then, Rosa appeared with Rydia in her wake. She asked the words of "what are you doing?" that ran through Cecil's mind. In reaction, Kain did a strange thing. With his free hand he clutched his head, as if pained. It was then that someone else stepped through those doors.

Golbez.

A little bit looking too much like Darth Vader, still he's very uber-cool. The sort of classy dark villian. No glitz, no glamor, no silly poetry. Just kick your ass kind of villian

The series of events etched forever in the dark knight's mind as Golbez berated Kain's hesistance and mocked Cecil's weakness. When Edward and Yang tried to interfere, Golbez blasted them aside like so much dust. To the dark knight's dismay Golbez made off with Rosa, instructing Kain to take the water crystal, leaving the three men lying helpless in the crystal room.

Thankfully, Rydia healed their wounds and the four gathered, trying to make sense of the loss. They had no choice to regroup and strike back but each of them knew that they faced a much deadlier enemy now...

A decision was made to take on Baron by the sea, as Cecil knew their airforce to be vastly superior to any kingdom. A ship was provisioned for them, and they made their way to the dock, Cecil clutching the new dark sword the king had given him. Yang's wife fussed over the four briefly before they boarded, making their way for Baron.

At this point you'll get the Counter augment. Although you will receive better augments eventually and may wish to use this one on Yang or Edward (both who will give you much better augments later) Counter is quite a useful augment and I gave it to Cecil.

As they sail, the four formulate a plan to sneak into Baron and see if they can recapture the crystals and save Rosa. But as they discuss, a shadow envelopes the ship and it begins to rock crazily due to waves that had been there moments ago.

Leviathan, the legendary sea monster.

The sailors panic and the sea captain tries to steer the ship away, but it's futile. The monster batters into the ship and in one such shake Rydia falls overboard. Selflessly Yang goes in after her. Cecil calls out their names and then finds Edward collasped onto the deck and runs over to him. The last thing the dark knight sees is the shadow of the beast towering over him as darkness takes him away...

I have to say, what an awesome scene...

Cecil awakens on a beach, bereft of everything except his sword and armor. Rydia, Edward and Yang are nowhere to be seen. The dark knight picks himself up and heads to the nearest civilization and it is with trepidation and a bit chargin that he realizes what it is.

Mysidia. The City of Mages and the same one he attacked and stolen the water crystal from. The people in the town recognize him as well as most are unpleasant at best. More than once Cecil had to find some potion to counteract the effects of some sleep or transformation spell cast by the disgruntled black mages. The white mages are little better, their barbs almost as bad as the poison.

It was no more than he deserved he knew.

I admit I actually made Cecil talk to all the villagers because it was hilarious to have him run around as a toad and a pig, etc. Though I found the poison annoying, still it's a great bit of fun. Hey, Cecil did earn it!

With only a vague idea of where he was going, the dark knight arrived at the House of Prayer. Inside he found the Elder, the same man he'd struck down to grab the crystal from. And from the looks of it, the Elder recognized him too.

At first the discourse looked like it would turn ugly but the Elder instead offered him a means of both repenting for his sins and attaining a power to defeat Golbez.

He was to become a paladin.

With no idea how to accomplish such a task, Cecil implored for some assistance and the Elder granted it in the form of two apprentice mages. At first the dark knight was disconcerted by the young age of the twins, but took them on anyways, knowing he would need all the allies he could get.

I found it incredibly annoying that neither of them could use bows and arrows in this verison, as that made them very useful against the avians and just in general. But thankfully Twin Magic always makes up for it...It's at this point you might want to pop a few augments on these two as they have very useful augments to give down the line. I know I wish I had.

So Cecil set out with the two in tow, onto Mt. Ordeals...

Cecil's sword is actually a lot more effective than the king in Fabul gives him credit for. They say his sword wouldn't be effective against undead yet I found only one or two monsters resistant to it. Also, reaching the bottom of the mountain and using the chocobo to heal up is a cheap and efficient way to level up. Plus, you can use the chocobo to get back to Mysidia after.

Cecil and the twins head up the mountain but are halted early on by a wall of flames sprouting out from the ground. It's too high to jump across and unnecessary anyways as Palom is able to douse the flames with ice, albiet with a bit of mouthy pride.

After the black mage is chastised by his sister, the three make their way up. Cecil learns the value of the twins, from their individual magic to their combined magics, and in general resourcefullness. Cecil knew he had to be on guard for the mountain could present many a surprise, but there was one surprise the dark knight wasn't counting on.

Tellah. The sage from time ago was also on his way through the mountain and they stopped in each other's tracks upon seeing each other. Cecil has the misfortune to give the sage the bad news about Edward and Rydia. It is then they are told what Tellah's on the mountain for--to attain a legendary spell, one that could possibly defeat Golbez.

It is decided that they would travel together again, the sage's dual spells making a wonderful contribution once again. Nothing stands in their way with any sort of real threat until...

Sacrimgonline, fiend of earth. He declares that he's been sent by Golbez to finish Cecil and his company off, and with his minions he plans to follow through with his order.

There's a good dose of magic with two mages and a sage. I left all three in the back and Tellah serve as primary healer while the twins dished out the pain with twin magic. There's a constant retaliation from the fiend, but this fight wasn't difficult at all. Of course, I ran back to the save point to heal and save as....

Victorious, the band cross the bridge, intend on scaling the apex. But something is behind them! The fiend has been reborn, far deadlier now. This time he vows he will not fail, threatening to take them to hell with him.

This fight is actually kind of a bitch. The fiend counters the fire spells, so making sure ever spell has mass effect is very important. I again went with Twin Magic and had Tellah on heal duty, although his low MP count forced me to use Porom from time to time. Of course, had I just remembered the whole cure-hurt thing this would have been so much easier...

The struggle is long and hard, forcing the team to regroup several times, near to seeing an end more than once. They emerged victorious again, however, sending the fiend plummeting to his death into the beautiful lake below. Now, onward, thought Cecil...to the voice that called to him...

My son...?

Cecil and the three wizards enter a small temple, made of the same material as all the crystal rooms. It is mesmerizing to the eye. At the far end is a floor to ceiling, wall to wall, mirror. It draws the dark knight to it, bringing a sense of warmth and familiarity...

A voice tells him to be strong, to renounce the darkness, accept the light. The dark knight raises his sword, in salute or agreement, he does not know. A pillar of the brightest light strikes down upon him, and when he can open his eyes again, Cecil sees himself as...a paladin!

I don't care how cheesy this was. I always enjoyed this scene. There's a feeling of epicness, a feeling of pride. Plus, Cecil proves vastly more powerful as a paladin over a dark knight!

But overcoming his past isn't as simple as taking on a new persona Cecil quickly comes to learn, as the mirror did not change with him, and behind it is the vision of the dark knight he once was. Worse, the image breaks free of the glass, coming at him!

The twins and Tellah rush over to his aide, but Cecil waves them back. This is his trial, his atonement and he alone must face it.

This is a staged fight. Unless you try to fight back, you'll win in a handful of rounds. I've never actually tried to fight back, so I've no idea what happens if you do, but I imagine it's probably death.

The voice speaks once more telling Cecil to stop Golbez before fading away. As they leave Cecil can't dispell the sound of "my son" from his ears...
