Corrine's The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Game Diary

Written By Corrine 295 days ago

I had to do it. My willpower was too weak to resist getting a game my first day on the job. Aside from the great experience I had today, with great people, which put me at ease about the whole choice of working there, there’s just something special about being around so. Many. Games. for hours that’s blissful.

My head almost exploded from the goodies taunting me from the shelves, so I dug into my wallet and chose something to spend my evenings curled up with, especially since it looks like I’ll finish SotC rather soon (nearly halfway completed; that reminds me to update that game diary ASAP as well!).

I’ve been lusting for a 360 and have a huge list of games I’m dreaming about for that system, but I figured, I shouldn’t spend so much $ on that right now if I haven’t even looked more into what I already have. I did win a Wii after all and since it’s backwards compatible with the GC, that’s two whole FREE consoles I’ve barely dug my claws into.

Enough chatter. What I picked up tonight:
One white GC controller.
One used copy of Wind Waker.

Stupid me, I forgot the memory card!

I’ve always wanted to play Wind Waker, since it came out. But I never went out and got a Game Cube and so I forgot about the whole thing. Also I’ve wanted to play GC games on my Wii, but I just… never went out and got the controller. *laughs* I’m lazy, aren’t I?

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is the 10th Zelda game, the first of which was released in 1986. I don’t know much about the plot, and I’d rather *not* know much about it until I play it for myself, which this should chronicle.

I’ll briefly sum up my experience with it tonight, since I stopped playing and couldn’t save:

Immediately I fell in love with the art for the backstory about the hero of old. It reminds me of old Anglo-Saxon art, which I have a huge nerdgasm for. The game continually takes aspects of this type of art and has stuck it in what I‘ve seen so far, which makes me very happy. The cel shading of the game was always a really appealing style to me; it’s simple, but still has a lot of beautiful detail. I’m not even usually a big fan of cel-shading but it works quite well here. It’s stylized perfectly.

I found the controls very intuitive to use, and I’ve never really played a GameCube game before. It’s probably because I got used to the controls on Twilight Princess, which despite the Wiimote seem rather similar. I remember trying briefly TP and Ocarina of Time on my friend’s GameCube and absolutely hating the controls. This time the controller felt very natural in my hand. It’s a very comfortable one. <3

The music was very folk-ish, and Zelda-ish. I don’t know how to describe it, but it just puts you in the mood for the game.

I stopped playing tonight, RIGHT after he got on the pirate ship. It was easy to advance and I assume getting on the ship is where the meat of the story starts; for this reason I think it starts a lot faster than TP. Oh, by the way- Pirates? How awesome is that?

I caught all three of the piggies for the neighbor woman. Hehehe, that was a really lovely touch. It reminds me of the chickens in Twilight Princess.

Anyway, once I pick up a memory card tomorrow I’ll detail more of my progress on the game, and hopefully I can finish this and the SotC diaries. Might I add that these diaries are great motivation to play; I love writing about my experiences and I love reading about others’ experiences. Great feature.

So I've gotten as far as Windfall Island right now.

Getting past the Forsaken Fortress was fucking annoying, because I suck at 3D Zelda; I'm SO not used to the concept at all. I had gone everywhere in the dungeon except the one place I had to be, and I couldn't get past the stupid guards because I suck at timing.

In the main center room with the ship, on a certain floor, you're supposed to traverse this long stretch with two Moblin guards and get into a door to where Aryll, your sister, is held. I kept getting caught. Boo.

I set up my cam so Michael could watch me play and that was fun. He helped me out and I finally got through. Yay! It was off to Windfall Island.

Some creepy boat kept talking to me and he was pathetic and wanted a sail. Soooo I looked around the island, exploring the other mini-things as well.

I found a picto-box, those rats that dumped you out the tunnel were annoying. (but so cute!) The dude in green, I forget his name, Tingle? was really creepy. I wanted him to go away.

There's a really emo guy sitting on the steps in the town, who wants you to fuck off, or to take a picture of a round pale thing for him. I have no idea what he wants, whatever. :P

The fat rich guy who wants you to find his daughter is amusing. I broke all his vases and had to pay a tidy sum of money. :o I hate him.

OH! The squid mini-game was my favourite part of the island so far. That guy who hosts it, he puts a little picture with a hole in front of his face to act out the scene in the mini-game. LOL. The game is weird, it's kind of like battleship? Or Minesweeper. It took me three tries to win it, and I got a piece of heart!

I loved talking to the people around the town, they're all so interesting. Especially that creepy dancing guy. I don't know what he's about but I suspect it's kind of important.

I found my sail but I don't want to leave the island yet. I'm currently playing hide and seek with the misfit boys and I've got 1/4 of them found.

Hahahahahaha! You met Tingle!

You poor, poor thing. *comforts you*

He's one of the newer staples in the Zelda games, and a tad... strange, to put it blunty. He's made a career out of it.

You'll figure out what the "round pale thing" is eventually, and you'll kick yourself for not figuring it out sooner.

I decided I'd move on to Dragon Roost Island even though I didn't finish the mini-puzzles at Windfall. I hope this won't hurt me later on? I know that in certain other games if you try to finish certain puzzles later they don't work.

So Dragon Roost Island is funky. I swam around the whole thing and saw the shrine for the wind god, I learned Wind's Requiem there on my sexy Wind Waker that the boat gave me. The Wind God is a frog on a cloud! How cool is that?!

I figured that you'd use the bomb flowers for some specific purpose so I threw them at the rocks and yes, they blew up. So I climbed up to where the mailman was, he's cool. And I followed him into the cave where the chieftain asked me to help his son Komali, because he's depressed he can't get one of Valoo's scales. Komali is pretty emo. He has Din's Pearl. Din is the Oracle of Seasons. I thought that was a sexy reference.

Medli, the girl training to be the attendant to Valoo, wanted me to meet here in the fiery center of Dragon Roost. Someone got pissed and threw some rocks around and a big boulder plugged up the center of the lake. Medli wanted me to throw her up into the shrine, so I tried a few times and failed miserably. It's funny when she smacks into the ledge.

Then I played the Wind Waker song I learned and picked her up and went to the ledge in the bottom of the dry lake, and threw her over and up to the other side. She gave me an empty bottle for my efforts. :o

Mailman was waiting for me back inside. Apparently I helped Medli and she got kidnapped. Oh shit.

Then I started getting sleepy, so I saved and came here. <3

Ahh, nostalgia. This nearly makes me want to set aside the games that I am playing at the moment and go through and finish WW again. Masterful game that, and my favourite LoZ to date.

So what happened, Corrine? Did you play it all the way through or did you get distracted?

I got pretty far in it; I can't recall where because I did get distracted by other games. *laughs* Phantom Hourglass is a beautiful sequel, though, and catches the spirit of the game wonderfully.
