As I stated before, I will not be including an arbitrary numerical value by which to rate this game. There will only be my opinions based on my experience playing.
The Game:
At a whopping 950+ megs(basically a gig), I will immediately say that depending on your free time and downloading speed through you ISP... this title fell short for me as many game adaptations for a blockbuster movies do. However, my download speeds from the PSN were a bit slow right after the upgrade, and now they are pretty fast and getting better it seems. This download took under an hour for me. BUT if you are only reading this to decide whether or not to download this... I'm not going to reccomend you do. Sorry.
The game boots up and you are allowed to skip right through all of the developer logos and animations (which I like) and skip right to the game. The scenario for this sandbox-style level is pretty basic. You are in enemy territory (suspiciously TERRORIST-ish in its desert location "whording weapons of mass destruction")and trying to basically destroy EVERYTHING in your path witch includes the following: Tanks, Turrets (lazer and missile), helicopters, and a few foot soldiers... oh, and dont forget the large "weapons of mass destruction" signified by orange brackets as you approach them. I bring the enemies up first because I like to start with the negative, and end on a positive note.. and those were hard to come by for this review.
THE ENEMIES IN THIS DEMO SUCKED!!! I'm not talking about how hard they were to defeat either. I'm talking about the way they looked. Despite the high level of detail done on Iron Man himelf, the enemies looked like poor cardboard targets at an amusement park. Destroy a tank, and watch it blow up.. and then break into 5 tank segmants that are now charred (signified by the black) and vanish in a mater of a few seconds. These enemy effects were purely horrendous, circa 1997 on the original PS1. I thought I was playing the first level of syphon Filter all over again.
During the game you start flying, this is actually done well. I reccomend you stay flying as the level itself (enemies and terrain) become horrendeously pixelized and one dementional (cardboard grass). Should you decide to walk for a bit (and by the way, EVERYTIME YOU LAND he does that whole one-knee dramatic pose) you have the option of using a melee attack and i would just say to you, DONT.
I actually took the time to go "melee" with one of the human NPCs and it was a single hit effort to throw his poorly animated ass to the ground. It just looked terrible if you weren't flying.
The good:
The flying was done well in my opinion and I felt that the movement (other than walking) was easy to pick up and fun to use at times even. I enjoyed the pressure sensitive thrusters that really made the curved L2 and R2 buttons feel right at home. The weapons system is layed out nice and doesn't take any time to figure out. I even liked the way you use the directional buttons to chose the part of the suit you want to direct more power too (i.e. life support, thrusters, weapons, etc.).
In closing I will say that I would really only reccomend this to the big Iron Man fans that would like to get a feel for flying as Iron Man, otherwise it isn't worth the huge download size.
BUT WAIT!!!
The Iron Man movie looks GREAT! Because my wife is in the NAVY I get to go to a sneak preview wednesday night they are having on base. I am still exited for the film despite how terrible this game was.

I played the demo on 360. I don't hate it. It's not the worst game I've
ever played, but it is definitely a middle of the road title. I thought Iron
Man looked great, but I disagree about the flight controls. I think they
were wonky as hell.
The battle system is something that, if you take the time to really learn
it, could be fun, but I found it lacking, personally.
All in all, it is what it is. It's a movie game. It's not shovelware, but it's
nothing that really stands out either. |

I gave it a bash a few days after it came out.
Suffice to say, I wasn't impressed. |
