Tokyo Game Show’s Japan Game Awards has chosen its honored winners this year. The Game of the Year gong has been struck for two games this time, which were decided to be equally awesome.
The Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association, the group that organizes the TGS, organized the awards show. The public suggests a pool of possible winners, and the Japan Game Awards Selection Panel chooses the recipients of the awards. The panel is made up of game industry personnel. Games that could be entered for the awards had to be released in Japan starting April 1, 2006; the cut off date was March 31, 2007.
The gong rang first for Nintendo’s Wii Sports, which was chosen because of its intuitiveness and the fact that anyone can play regardless of gamerliness. Said the CESA, "Wii Sports has totally revamped the image of traditional game consoles, and has won over new demographic sectors, particularly women and seniors." Congratulations Nintendo! Your appeal to a wide demographic is appreciated by all. I would let you date my sister.
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd, the tied winner, is a PSP game, and is in fact one of the most fabulously popular PSP titles in Japan (quite an achievement). Six hundred and fifty thousand Japanese gamers picked up the first in the series, and the sales of the sequel have been favorable as well. The panel says MHP 2nd is "more than a game;" the title has become a communication tool in Japan, notably for junior and high school students.
Nintendo’s Pokemon Diamond and Pearl won the Best Sales Award, for the hefty sum of 4,930,000 games sold over the past year.
Two Xbox 360 titles won the Global Award Japanese Product and Global Award Foreign Product; the awards went to Dead Rising and Gears of War, respectively.
Several games were also noted for distinction: Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Ryu ga Gotoku 2, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Blue Dragon, New Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, Gundam Musou, and Okami.

Honestly, not too surprised about Monster Hunter Portable 2nd; the series has a *huge* following in Japan, as well as being a unique series in its own right, and definately deserved the rewards when viewed from a Japanese cultural standpoint.
Wii Sports is an odd choice, due to it's general looseness as a game in its own right, but I can at least understand the decision.
Very smart choices all round.
I LOLed at Pokemon getting the Best Sales Awards though. |
