Looks this is coming a lot sooner than we thought. Sony confirmed yesterday that the highly anticipated PS3 Firmware 2.40 update, which includes in-game XMB and the launch of "Trophies", will be go live tomorrow, July 2nd!

Obviously, we have to get version 2.36 first, which we haven't, but today Sony confirmed that with the Playstation 3's version 2.4 firmware update users will finally receive their much desired cross media bar ('bout effing time Sony.)
