Terra Branford
Full Name: Terra Branford
Being the character that you first start off with, Terra is the figure which most of the story revolves around. Not much is known of her background, though she is often labeled by outsiders as being an Imperial Witch, a reputation which stems from her ability to use magic. A single moment's weakness caused the Empire to steal away most of her memories, giving her a demure and occasionally naive personality.
Her special ability is Morph, which allows her to briefly assume Esper form and double the power of her magic.
Locke Cole
Full Name: Locke Cole
A self-proclaimed treasure hunter, Locke's penchant for traveling and finding rare relics is surpassed only by his desire to assist others who have been either wronged or oppressed by the Empire. An event in his past caused him to fail a loved one when they needed him the most, and so aiding others such as Celes and Terra have been vindication for him ever since.
His patented Steal ability allows for him to pillage enemies during battle (with a certain probability).
Edgar Roni Figaro
Full Name: Edgar Roni Figaro
The envy of men and women the world over, Edgar Roni Figaro is one of the youngest men ever to inherit a throne. Ruler of Figaro (whose very stronghold is a machine in itself), he is an accomplished machinist and a frequent womanizer. Like many of the devices he crafts, he is not all what he seems on the surface. While Edgar puts on the farce of being a staunch advocate of the Empire, he secretly conspires with the Returners to end its tyranny.
Many of his creations are part of his arsenal in battle, available through the Tools command.
Sabin Rene Figaro
Full Name: Sabin Rene Figaro
Sabin Rene Figaro is Edgar's twin brother, and a man who has always felt his brawn to be ill-suited to the ways of royalty. When it came time to choose a successor to the throne, a coin toss (rigged by Edgar) made it so that he could leave the kingdom and chose his own path. Sabin doesn't encounter his brother again until the two of them meet by chance on Mount Koltz.
Through the tutelage of his master Duncan, Sabin learned the way of the Blitz - a unique combo command that expends no magic points and dabbles in both offensive and defensive skills.
Celes Chere
Full Name: Celes Chere
Once a powerful general and Magitek Knight, Celes was stripped of her rank when questioning the motives of her superiors. Though marked for death, she managed to escape when rescued from South Figaro by Locke. As a born-and-bred soldier, she is often gutsy and sometimes a bit headstrong. A more cultured side eventually surfaces, however, as she warms up to a life outside of the Empire.
Her Runic ability allows her to draw an enemy's magic attack to her Runic Blade and transfers it into usable magic points.
Cyan Garamonde
Full Name: Cyan Garamonde
A retainer to the throne of Doma, Cyan's strengths come from his courage, honor, and skill with a blade. These qualities are put to the ultimate test, however, when the infamous Kefka poisons the kingdom's water supply, killing most of its subjects and even his wife and son. Enraged, Cyan ravages a local imperial outpost, intend on delivering justice to the one responsible.
Despite having such a timed handicap, his many different SwordTech attacks are instrumental when it comes to dispatching a single opponent or multiple enemies at once.
Gau
Full Name: Unknown
Many tumultuous years scavenging alongside other wild creatures on the Veldt have granted Gau strengths which can rival even the most stalwart of foes. His personality, at least to the few whom he befriends, is generally upbeat and mischievous. But at his core, there is a darker, more tragic side to his character, one that often makes him uncontrollable in battle.
Time spent with the local fauna allow him to mime the traits and abilities of a wide array of monsters, accessible through his Rage command. The more times it is used in conjunction with Jump, the more Rages he will learn.
Shadow
Full Name: Unknown
Nothing much is known about this individual. Your party may encounter him several times throughout the run of the game and, as a mercenary for hire, he will only join your cause for the right price. More of his past is gradually revealed through dreams he has while staying at inns.
His Throw ability allows you to hurl ninja stars, skeans, and virtually every unequipped weapon that is still in your party's inventory. He can also randomly counterattack an enemy by sending his faithful canine, Interceptor, into the fray and gorge the enemy.
Relm Arrowny
Full Name: Relm Arrowny
Accomplished beyond her years as an artist, Relm resides in the quiet villa of Thamasa beyond the reach of the Empire. While only ten years old, her mature and precocious personality mirrors that of the older denizens of the town.
Sketch allows her to capture the essence of most minor enemies (and a handful of major ones) and deflect it back at them. Over time, this skill can be adapted so far as to even control the enemy from afar and use commands as though they were just another member of the party.
Strago Magus
Full Name: Strago Magus
Many lifetimes ago, human soldiers known as Magi warriors repelled the last tide of espers. A thousand years later, their descendants dwell in obscurity, keeping their legacy hidden from outsiders. Strago is a sequined blue mage and also Relm's grandfather. His behavior is often a good counterpoint to his granddaughter's, usually easygoing and eager for adventure.
Relm and Strago are a team in that, any unique spell or ability 'sketched' by Relm will occasionally be catalogued by Strago's Lore command, which can then be reused at his leisure.
Mog
Full Name: Mog
Mog belongs to a race known as moogles, furry-white, waist-high creatures that dwell deep in the caves of Narshe. Unlike others of his race, Mog shares a link with the party when a vision from the esper Ramuh compels him to join the Returners' cause. He is also unique in being the only one of his kind to be able to speak English.
Though he can be a bit of a trash talker at times, he boasts some very impressive Dance skills that alter the party's surroundings and hit their enemies with whatever natural hazards to come with it.
Gogo
Full Name: Unknown
An enigma to all s/he encounters. Garbed in strange clothing and found in the belly of an underground beast, Gogo regards our heroes with as much skepticism as they do him/her. You won't encounter a more versatile member of the team than this one, as the master of the simulacrum has the ability to change menu commands to any of the commands of the rest of the group.
Gogo's key ability Mimic also makes it so that the actions of the last character, whether it be an attack, magic spell, or some other technique, are duplicated with uncanny precision. Like Umaro, Gogo also cannot equip magicite.
Umaro
Full Name: Umaro
Until the second half of the game, Umaro is little more than the yeti tale told to keep stragglers away from the mines of Narshe. When Mog is recruited as a permanent member however, he will find and convince the sasquatch to tag along. Though reticent and entirely uncontrollable in battle, he is nonetheless one of the strongest characters in the game.
With a Rage Ring equipped, he can hurl party members at the enemy for damage, and with a Blizzard Orb, he can harness the arctic winds of Narshe into a maelstrom to hit all targets on the screen.
