ICO - Walkthrough - The Graveyard and Altar Room < Back                ICO - Walkthrough - The Graveyard and Altar Room

Next proceed down the wide staircase and as they near the cemetery plots, you'll hear the sound of a black pool appearing and a considerable number of shadow demons will begin to attack. There will be at least three waves of them. You'll be confronted by Crow Sentries and their guardians, Spiders, and even a few Insect Demons. The battle will best be waged near the pool as Ico then won't have far to go to pull Yorda out and it's pretty likely that she'll be carried there more than once. You must destroy all of them before the portal will be resealed. Now they can head back down to the grave site area with impunity. Note the two pressure switches on either side of the far sealed door and a moveable box next to the near sealed door.

Drag the block onto either one of the pressure switches. Take Yorda's hand and walk with her onto the other pressure switch. Release her hand and have Ico climb out of the depression and head through the now opened door. You need to do the following activities relatively quickly or Yorda may again be attacked and carried off in your absence. Walk through the door and head to the right and climb the ladder. Continue a short distance along the ledge, then jump and catch the chain. Climb the chain and move Ico so that he faces the ledge so that he can get up to the next level. Head back to the front and walk through the door out on to the ledge and immediately push the moveable box off the edge to the ground below. Jump down after it and destroy the additional shadow demons that have appeared. Push the box onto the pressure switch that Yorda has vacated, granting Yorda access to the structure. It would be advisable to return to the stone couch at this point and save your game.

Leave Yorda inside and return to the ledge from which you pushed the block off. Head around to the left and go through the door. Walk along the path as far as possible. Climb onto the top of the ledge and head right to the ladder. Have Ico jump up and catch the end of the ladder and climb it all the way to the top. He doesn't need to turn, just press the 'Up' directional button and the 'Triangle' button and he'll jump backwards off of the ladder and grab the chain, which lowers, while at the same time rasing the third of the floor containing the Idol Doors. Have Ico remain where he is on the chain and turn him so that his back faces the side that has just risen. Press and hold the 'Circle' button so he'll swing back and forth. Get a good back and forth motion going, then press the 'Triangle' button when he's nearest the floor containing the Idol Doors. He'll jump over with ease and land on the floor there.

Black pools open up on the level Ico is on and down below near Yorda. The shadow demons are attacking again. Immediately head to the edge and press 'R1' to lean over and if you're lucky you may be able to pull her up and head for the Idol Doors. But probably not so you'll have to jump down and battle a substantial number of demons. Don't ignore the small Spider demons for too long or they'll get larger and nastier, however at the same time don't concentrate on them. Once they're defeated, have Ico head to the lowered chain and jump on it and climb up a ways. Have him swing again and jump back onto the side where he jumped down from to save Yorda. Now he can extend a hand to Yorda without interference and pull her up. They can now both walk to the Idol Doors, then pass through out into the grassy area surrounding the windmill.
