ICO - Walkthrough - Escape and Return < Back                ICO - Walkthrough - Escape and Return

Head out through the door and over to the ladder down to the entrance door, which has been reopened. Run down the stairs and along the pathway, turning back toward the castle at the corner and continue on to the ladder near entrance. Your trip back across the bridge is thankfully unimpeded by the appearance of any spirit demons. Have Ico climb the tall ladder and then call Yorda up after him to avoid any potential problems. Go through the doorway and head over to the switch and pull it to lower the drawbridge just inside the doorway below near the base of the ladder. This gives them access to the main gate from the west entrance. Head back outside and then down the ladder. Yorda should start to follow Ico down, but he should still call her when he reaches the floor. Take Yorda's hand and head to the right, then through the door and across the now completely lowered west drawbridge.

Continue on into the chandelier room and head around to the opposite side. Take the collapsed walkway on down and continue up the stairs through the open Idol Doors and outside. Keep going down the steps to the bottom then turn left or right and follow the pathway to the bottom floor. Head over to the cobblestone pathway and follow it up the stairs and outside to the gate area. Head straight for the stone couch over on the far left side and have them sit upon it and save your game. The is your last chance to do so until the game is over, which does not occur for some time yet. Now the fun begins! Have Ico take Yorda's hand and walk over to the stone column in the center of the two glowing gate sections. Energy will shoot out from Yorda knocking Ico over backwards and flat on his back, but also causing the gates to finally open and stone pathways to emanate from the castle and other side of the chasm, which join at the center with almost no sound. Yorda is seriously weakened by this process. Ico will ask her if she's alright and she tells him that she's a bit more alright this time. Take her hand and walk out through the gate and out onto the pathway. If Ico runs she will stumble and fall behind multiple times. One they arrive near the juncture of the two pathways, energy pulses out from the gate area and zaps Yorda and Ico again. Ico is knocked onto the other half and left hanging over the edge. The pathways then start to retract separating the two of them. As soon as possible get Ico up on the retreating pathway and without any hesitation run to the center and back toward Yorda and jump off the edge toward her. He'll miss and drop his weapon into the water far below in the process, but Yorda will catch his arm for a change and struggle to pull him up. As the pathway continues to move backward into the castle a shadow begins to overtake her as does the shadowy queen and as they completely do so, she loses consciousness and drops Ico into the depths far below. Her parting words to Ico are "Thank you".

When Ico regains consciousness, he realizes he's not dead and that he's landed on the top of a cage suspended above the water with several more of them nearby. There's only one thing to be done and that's to run and jump from one to the next. You'll have a slightly better chance of success if you have Ico wait to start his run until the two cages in question appear to be heading a bit closer together. Although you should be pretty well practiced and skillful at jumping from edges by now so the relatively minor differences in distance between the two cages shouldn't really make any difference. At any rate run and jump to the suspended cage to the left. Do the same with the next one. The next one to the right is a bit farther away than the past two, so you may wish to proceed a little more carefully and time your jump accordingly. If you happen to catch the bottom lip on any of them, just climb up to the top and continue. Jump over to the next cage on the right, which is relatively close and Ico will probably land on top of it. Finally run and jump diagonally to the left onto the last cage. Head over to the other side and run and jump off onto dry land. Have Ico run to the left toward the tunnel and on through it. Turn to the right and follow the stream along the right side on into the next area.

ICO - Walkthrough - Escape and Return

Walk up the incline and onto the platform. Go over to the switch and pull it to lower a chain out toward the center of the reservoir that Ico needs to climb up on. Pull then push the block over the edge and into the water. Have him climb down the ladder and jump into the water. Swim over to the box and press the 'Circle' button to nudge it toward the other side being mindful of the stronger currents. Head toward the ladder on the other side. Once the block is reasonably near it, climb up on the block and jump onto the ladder. Head on up and move to the lever and pull it to raise the gate that was blocking the entrance to the reservoir. Jump back into the water and head for the box. Push the box through the gate and on straight ahead into the reservoir. Continue on until the chain that was lowered by the first lever is in view (use the 'Right' mini-joystick to help locate it if necessary). Once you have the box in reasonable proximity to the chain (note that it will stay in position), climb onto the box and jump on the chain. You're now done with the box. Climb up upon the platform and push the device on the track forward, so that it engages the water wheels on either side, transferring power from the one on the right to the one on the left.

Jump back into the water (yes it's a long way down, but he can do it) and swim back toward the gate that the second lever opened. As Ico passes the wooden structure on the right, there's an accessible area between the structure and the gate, which Ico should head over to and climb up onto. Continue over to the slowly turning water wheel and walk slightly past the center point, then turn and face the direction that it's turning. Wait until a peg is a bit in front of Ico than have him jump toward it and grab on. It's not difficult to do! The wheel will carry him up and around to the top and across a platform. Press the 'X' button to drop him off onto the platform. Walk along the platform away from the wheel toward the stone wall of the cave. There's a barely visible ledge on the left side below the pipe that he can jump up on and from there up onto the pipe above it. Have him do so then slide to the right until Ico drops down onto the other part of the pipe that's been broken away. Continue right until he can go no farther on the pipe, then have him drop to the next platform. It's connected via a larger diameter pipe to the following platform.

Have him carefully drop down on the pipe and slowly cross it. When he nears the next platform, he can jump onto it, which should save a precarious step or two. Have him jump up on the pipe that circles the cylindrical structure and slide around to the other side on it until he drops off. Next have him climb up the vertical pipe as far as he can. Make him jump off backwards toward the chain behind him and he'll turn and catch on near the bottom. Note the second chain off to the right, which is his next destination. Orient him so that he's facing it and start him swinging. When he's moving at a good clip, have him jump at the end of an arc onto the next chain. Now repeat this process continuing in the same direction and jump onto the platform. Walk through the short corridor over towards the other slowly turning water wheel. Have him grab onto a peg in a similar fashion to the way he did so on the first one and ride it up to the top, then drop off onto the wooden platform above. There's a faint shadow to be seen when he's over the platform, that can be used as a guide for when he should drop. Follow the wooden pathway to the right and around to the end.

Jump from there onto the first of two vertically rotating cylinders. Head over to the next one and jump onto it. The third cylinder is revolving on a horizontal axis and is thus a little more difficult to jump onto and traverse. The trick is to land on the center of it, then run along it using a little bit of right movement of the left mini-joystick to keep him near the center of the top if he starts to fall off on the left and a little left movement of the left mini-joystick if he starts to fall off on the right. To do this get a bit of a running start from the left side of the second vertically spinning cylinder and then jump onto the center of the horizontally spinning cylinder. When he gets near the end of it, simply jump up on the platform beyond. Be careful not to jump too far or too near the end or he'll be back in the water and have to restart from the box near the first chain. Once he's safely on the other side, have him head to the right and then down the short wooden walkway and off to the left toward the light at the end of the tunnel.

Continue on out of the cave toward the cliff side above the sea. Head to the left along the progressively narrower path until he's taken several steps past the lower pathway, which is now visible from above. Have him walk over the edge and hang down and drop to it. He can then turn to the left and run to the edge and jump across the gap over to the other side. Continue to the left, then climb up on the ledge above. Walk carefully to the left until he can drop down to the ledge below. Drop down onto it then climb up on it and continue left. Follow this somewhat longer ledge around as far as possible, then back up a step, then drop down multiple times to the wider ledge at the bottom. Carefully jump over the ledge on the left. He may grab onto the ledge above or land on the ledge below. In either case he needs to get up on the ledge above and continue to the left until he's over the large dual rusty pipes. Have him drop down onto the pipes and make his way across to the other side. Continue inside and around the bend. Then through another opening into the ante chamber and finally on to the end where further progress is blocked by a metal grate.

Climb down the chain and stop near the bottom. Have Ico turn so he's facing the tower and then initiate a swing in its direction. Once a good swing has been obtained, have him jump at the end of an arc onto the tower's upper circular ledge. Head around to the right, then carefully (the left mini-joystick will tend to cause him to stumble over the edge even though you're holding it straight) walk across the narrow walkway to the corresponding outer circular ledge. Head to the left and have him run and jump over the gap when he encounters it. When he reaches the rusty metal track above, have him climb up onto it and walk along it to the chain motor. Pull the motor (and chain) back to the stop. Walk back to the outer walkway and drop down onto it, then walk underneath the metal track and face the chain. Have him align himself with the chain, then run about three steps toward it and jump off the ledge toward the chain. He'll probably hit high and appear to miss, but will catch the chain near the bottom. Have him initiate another swing and after about three swings, he can jump back over to the outside rim one level lower. He lands right in front of a ladder, which should be ignored. Continue on to the left and have him run and jump over the two gaps, that he encounters, until he comes to the next ladder down. Have him descend and stand on the bottom rung with his hands two rungs above. Have him jump backwards and he should end up hanging from the edge of the broken walkway back to the center tower. Have him climb up onto it and walk in toward the central tower, then right over to the ladder.

Climb all the way down into the very shallow water and walk over to the road leading into the tower. Have him climb up on the road. He's now arrived at the location where he was brought into the castle. Note the closed Idol Doors on the left. How's he going to get them open without Yorda? Remember "Get the Sword" from the latter part of the introduction? Head toward the outer wall and through the doorway. Walk past the boat and turn right toward the water and pier, then turn left and follow the pathway up the left side of the water to the altar. Get the sword! Have him retrace his steps back to the Idol Doors, which can now be opened with the sword. Continue inside for more deja vu. Walk to the lever and pull it, then ride the elevator upstairs. The sword parts another pair of Idol Doors and Ico enters a room with two circular stairways leading up to the room where he was originally entombed.
