< Back ICO - Walkthrough - The Chandelier & Courtyard
There're two exits from the level area Ico and Yorda are on. The doorway leads into the upper level of the Chandelier Room, which is where you want to go first. The stairway leads down and around the cylindrical edifice they're standing on, where they'll encounter three bombs at its foot and a doorway into the Chandelier Room's lower level. Have them walk to the right from the stone couch across the top of the cylindrical structure and into the upper level of the Chandelier Room. Be careful on the short walk between the circular floor area and the door as Ico can fall off. The object here is to get both of them across to the other side on the lower level, to the Idol Doors, which can be seen from above. Head to the right and walk around the corner. Continue past the chain, that's hanging down from the side of the walkway and stop near the ladder on the wall with the windows. Climb up the windows on the right side to the ledge above, then walk left to the ladder up to the cross beams above. Climb it and carefully walk across the beam towards the center of the room. Move Ico across on the cross bar until he's directly over the chandelier, then have him drop down onto it. It'll break loose and fall onto the bridge below, cracking its support and jarring Ico loose, who lands unharmed on the bridge as part of the chandelier falls down into the depths, while a second section containing two candles, remains on the lower level.
Head back outside to where they began this section and walk past the stone couch and down the spiral staircase to the three bombs below. Pick up a bomb with the 'Circle' button and head through the door into the lower level. Set it down next to the cracked column, that's supporting the bridge. Head over to the nearby part of the chandelier remaining on the lower level. Walk up to either candle and push the 'Circle' button to light the tip of Ico's staff. The end of the staff will then be lit for a few seconds. Run over to the bomb and light it as well by positioning the flame that Ico carries near the bomb's wick. Stand back a bit and the bomb will explode and blow the bridge support away causing one end of the bridge to fall to the floor below.
Take Yorda's hand and exit through the door and climb the circular stairs. Stop at the stone couch and save your game. Walk through the door to the upper level and then straight ahead down the cracked bridge. As they start down, they're attacked by yet another pack of shadow demons. If possible only fight any one that grabs Yorda and head down the bridge as quickly as possible toward the Idol Doors. Once she opens them, the shadow demons will disappear. If one does succeed in grabbing and making off with her, have Ico run as quickly as possible down the stairs, then up the first short set of stairs toward the Idol Doors and turn right and over to the black pool near the hanging chain and pull her out. Either destroy them, which is quite possible, before continuing, or maintain the "only attack the one who's trying to grab Yorda" strategy, and continue heading for the Idol Doors. Once Yorda has opened the Idol Doors, exit through them.
Once they walk through the door, half a dozen portals open up and out come the shadow demons. The only way to get rid of them is for both of them to reach the Idol Doors in the middle of the lower area at the other end of the room. Run down the staircase and then head right (if the flying shadow demons take Yorda, you'll be closer to where they'll take her, which is the black pool in the far right corner). Run down the pathway to the next set of stairs and continue down them. From here the quickest way back to Yorda will be back up the stairs they just came down, then jump over the far edge of the pathway to the floor below and over to the black pool. Head to the left to the cobblestone walkway, go through the arch, and climb the short set of center stairs to the Idol Doors. Yorda will open them, destroying the shadow demons in the process. Yorda will then run through the opened doors into the Main Gate.
Follow her through the doors and see the open gate through which Ico mistakenly believes they can now escape through. They run towards it as it begins to close. Yorda stumbles as the gate closes and they're confronted by her mother the evil shadow queen, who tells her daughter to return to the castle, then tells Ico to stay in his place and leave Yorda alone. She then departs in a puff of black shadow smoke. Ico then runs to Yorda and takes her hand and asks her if she's alright. She tells him that she's angered the Queen. Note the eight torch posts within the area. They look like they might be operated. Have Ico walk down the middle cobblestone aisle and over to one and stand near the handle. Push the 'Circle' button to and move the left mini-joystick in the direction away from the post, and Ico will pull it and it'll settle into place. Do this with the remaining seven posts in the court yard (the sequence is unimportant). Note that they can also be pushed from the other side.
Head back into the previous area and back up to the other entrance (the shadow demons here have been decisively dealt with and will not reappear). Head over to the left and pick up one of the bombs. Carry it over to the right side and place it near the boarded up passage. Walk back to the nearest torch and have Ico light his staff, then head back to the bomb he just placed next to the boards and light it and back away a bit. The boards will be blown to bits when the bomb explodes. Ico and Yorda can now walk through and along the corridor and down the steps and then along the walkway to the stone couch and you can save your game.
