< Back             Devil May Cry 3 - Review

We all know how much of a pain in the butt Vergil/Vante is but now I will go over some of the keypoints that will be helpful in the three battles in the game.

The weapons I recommend to use on Vergil:

Devil Arms:
Rebellion
Beowolf

Guns:
Ebony & Ivory
Kalina Ann

Style recommended for Vergil:
Trickster
Royal Guard
Quicksilver

1st battle of the Darkslayer:

This battle is relatively simple because of the patience and because Vergil/Vante is merely playing with you so don't take him too seriously. He only has three close range attacks and one long range attack. If facing him Dante Must Die/Vergil Must Die, he uses his Phantom Swords to add to the mix so here we go!

Yamato Combo 1: This is his standard two hits with his sheath to the left and the right and hits you with a slash which has surprisingly good reach. First, he usually Air Tricks/Teleports and will do it behind you so he could catch you by surprise. He will occasionally mix this with with number 2.

Way of avoiding it: Rolling will help you avoid it since you are given temporary invincibility. Dashing with Trickster as well or jumping and Air Dashing away. Royal Guard's Guard ability if done right, will neglect almost all the damage if done right or else, ouch. As with Vergil, Air Trick Up or Down will do it or very fast.

Now how to take advantage of it: Vergil's biggest weakness is his huge openings and how easy it is tell what he will do next. The best devil arms to use against Vergil is the Rebellion and the Beowolf (if you happen to be replaying it). The best attack to use in this position is the Stinger because of it's awesome reach across the battle field and lay into him with combos of the Rebellion. Agni & Rudra is effective but leaves you open the instant he raises his hand up and parries and goes for the kill, Agni & Rudra does not take well to this due to the recovery.

Cerberus suffers due to it's lack of power and sometimes Vergil will ignore the blows of this weapon due to weaker power and just hit you anyway. Nevan suffers as well due to it's power as well but the delay is even worse but you can use it as opener and keep smacking him with the Rebellion. The Beowolf is probably the only other weapon you will need due to the power it has and it stuns Vergil in all encounters with it's power and it also easier to chain with the Rebellion.

As for Vergil, on the other hand, The Force Edge/Yamato's Stinger Attack will reach him easily as will Air Trick Upwards and using Starfall with the Beowolf (More damage if you know how to Jump Cancel. You can chain those two on him easily afterwards. If Vergil teleports close to you again to do it, just Air Trick Up and use the Helmbreaker like Dante with Air Trick as well and repeat. Vergil attacks due more damage than Dante's does and keep hitting him with combos until he parries again. The Yamato is not a good weapon to use against Vergil unless in the middle of a combo because he tend to ignore the blows of either combo till the finishing strike or to luckily cancel him out with Rapid Slash.

Yamato Combo 2: He will smack you into the air with his sword and smack you one more time back and put it away. He will also teleport to get to you with this one too.

Ways of avoiding it: Rolling and Dashing (Trickster) and Guarding (Royal Guard) and Air Tricking [With either Dante (Trickster) or Vergil (Darkslayer)]

How to take advantage of it: Pretty much the same as the last combo, just find an opening and exploit it.

Rapid Slash: He will dash and do well a very fast draw with his sword. With each battle, he will get faster with it and better range.

Ways of Avoiding it: Rolling, Dashing a few times, Guarding, jumping, Air Dash, Air Trick where ever.

How to take advantage of it: Well, getting a combo in is not very easy with this but I found the best way is with the Beowolf and there is good chance he will be stunned enough for a combo but other times, he will parry or Air Trick and do another combo or so. If so, avoid it with above with either Dante or Vergil.

Judgment Cut Version 1: He will reach for his sword and make a small cone shape wave that will hit you from a good distance with an orb with slicing animations. The difference between this one and the rest is the number he will send at you. He will only use this halfway through his health.

Ways of avoiding it: Same as before just anywhere away from it.

How to take advantage of this: This attack leaves him extremely open from anywhere based on how he uses it. Beowolf from the air is best then combo him several times as before.

And don't bother using Guns against Vergil since he will ignore/deflect in his own way but Vergil himself by all means. The only guns recommended with Vergil are Ebony & Ivory and Kalina Ann since the KA does a minor stun to Vergil and is helpful in case of this.

Dante/Vergil Must Die Attack:

Phantom Swords: He will create a barrier around himself and summon these swords out of nowhere, however, be warned, he will use them in four ways. He will usually say "Don't get so cocky".And here they are:

1. He will keep them around himself and attack like normal which makes dodging a bitch and when they wear off, they will shoot off afterwards.

2. He will summon them around you where they will do the reverse and hit you.

3. Same as 2 except when they hit it will be from far away but one by one.

4. Just Fire the ones he has around himself.

The only difference in them in the next two is the amount and how much he does it.

How to get rid of them: Kalina Ann or Your own Phantom Sword ring around him (hold Gun button, R1 and Forward) and they will cancel out.

2nd battle of the Darkslayer:

This time Vergil is using the awesome power of the Beowolf Gauntlets, which is going to make this fight a handful and he is not holding back because he now will Devil Trigger at will which make his combos faster. Vergil will have a slightly tougher time due to his lack of double jumping.

Beowolf Combo: He will punch you twice and kick you two more times. He will often mix this up with Rising Sun and hit you with Starfall. He will often use Air Trick to mess with you.

How to avoid: Roll, Dash, Air Trick, Jump away.

Take advantage of: Unlike the last fight, Vergil at this stage does not have many openings, I say just use the fastest attack to get to him and lay a combo into him usually after he does Starfall.

Rising Sun: Upward uppercut of sorts except Vergil does it with his feet and will always hit you with Starfall.

Star Fall: I call it the 'missile kick' because it automatically locks on and comes down like one. He will often teleport to either do this alone or the combo added to it for extra pain. Any way of dodging other than Guard will work.

"You shall not forget this devil's power... You are not worthy as my opponent."

Devil Trigger: He will transform into a blue demon truly from the depths of hell. His speed and power is increased and he can regenerate. If on DMD/VMD, he will mostly activate his Phantom Sword formation as well.

How to counter this: If you have the Beowolf, only two or three Killer Bee/Star Falls attacks will stop this due to speed. Or otherwise, Ebony and Ivory, Phantom Swords, and well-timed Helmbreakers with either Dante or Vergil. Thankfully, this does not last as long as in the next battle.

"You shall rest in peace"

When he says this he will go back to using his Yamato by going to the center of the arena and punch the floor.

Judgment Cut Version 2: Now three Orbs.

3rd battle of the Darkslayer:

This is it! The final battle between you and Vergil or your doppleganger depending on who you use. Vergil will Devil Trigger more often and use his new Force Edge but at least he does not have the Beowolf Gauntlets. This time you will have to cancel out DT mode at all costs before his halfway mark.

Force Edge/Yamato Combo: He will hit you with two hits from the Force Edge, two hit with sheath and two more with both weapons.

How to avoid: Rolling, Dashing, Guarding, Air Trick (Very fast).

How to take advantage: Vergil's Recovery time bites him in the ass once again. Beowolf easily stun hims with Killer Bee/Star Fall and the Rebellion's Stinger reachs him easily.

Force Edge/Yamato Air Combo: He hit you with the Force Edge Twice and smack you straight into the air, air trick with a Helmbreaker and end with a Stinger Attack. He tends to use this one more than above combo and mix it.

How to avoid and take advantage of: Same as before except wait till the combo ends and then strike.

Air Trick Helmbreaker: He will do this frequently through the battle and smash your head in with his sword from the air. You can also do the same to him too. Just use the same methods to dodge.

Stinger: He tends to do this on higher difficulties and lunges at you like you do. He mostly does this to stop you from spamming him or keeping him at a distance.

Judgment Cut Version 3: 5-7 Orbs (Here's a nice note about this attack: the more he has, the more that will be around him), just cancel out like before a bit faster.

Round Trip: He will throw the Force Edge at you which will track you. The best way dealing with this attack is either interrupting it which is easy to do with the time it takes or you can deflect it with either a Helmbreaker or a Killer Bee/Star Fall. Air Trick and Dashing is also a nice way of getting away.

Super Devil Trigger: You will notice this halfway through the battle when he say either "You're Going Down" or "Trash" and has a blue barrier/aura. If on DMD/VMD, he will summon the swords too so get rid of them at all costs. Do not bother to cancel him out or you will get pain in places you do not imagine you could. Here he will do the following attacks below:

Repeated Helmbreakers and occasionally mix with Force Edge/Yamato Air Combo: "You're going down", No shit, run like hell and when he does the Air Combo, jump and keep running.

Ultimate Judgment Cut A: He will usually say "Trash" and teleport away + summon lots of orbs of death which will strike at random which can be dodged through rolling, dashing, and anything with invincibility or good timing.

" " B: Same as before, but will follow you in a line, these are so much easier.

Thankfully, he has long recovery time after this so you can whale on him in anyway you like till he parries again. Doing Devil Trigger Explosion/Flux is not a bad idea at all while he does this (Hold DT Button and release when it reaches the right amount of power on you your DT Gauge). The reason I say DT Button is 'cause I got a different set-up than what the game has. Using Royal Guard's Release attack is the same way.
