Insight

In the early months of 1997, Square Enix (then Squaresoft) released a game onto an unsuspecting console market, under the name Final Fantasy VII.

Before the release of this pivotal installment in the Final Fantasy series, many RPGs were still relying on simplistic 2D graphics and basic storytelling techniques to push their gameplay forward. Final Fantasy VII, with its high production values, detailed charactisation, and complex plot, set a new standard for what console RPGs should represent, at least at the time.

Though it was likely not expected at the time, FFVII was set to become recognised as a legendary game within the series. Whether this recognition is deserved or not is an issue often argued about amongst fans of the series, and a topic of discussion unto itself.
