For newcomers to the series though, it seemed like too drastic a change in focus in retrospect to the heavily sci-fi orientated stylings of both FFVII and FFVIII. Regardless of which side of the fence you stand on, there's little disputing that Final Fantasy IX stood as a very proud monument to the series as a whole, paying homage throughout to the legacy that birthed its creation in the first place, whilst still building a unique identity of it own, one that is quite unlike any the series has seen before, or since. It was undoubtedly a fine send off for the PSone generation of Final Fantasy games, and for many of us old time fans it also was a strong reminder to us of the very qualities that made us fall in love with the series first time round, all those years ago.
