Microsoft bans gay gamer's gamertag from Xbox Live

Peoples' stupidity knows no bounds sometimes.

Apparently, even if your gamertag isn't directly offensive, if enough Xbox Live users complain about it, it'll be banned, as homosexual Live player "thegayergamer" recently found out.

The gamer explained the situation in his own words.

" I have had a bad morning. Last night when i tried to sign into my xbox live account "thegayergamer" I was told that it had to be changed. I figured that it was just from people reporting it as an offensive name being that the greater Xbox live community isn’t exactly welcome to gay people, I spend a lot of time muting people on Halo 3. I assumed that once I called Microsoft they would straighten things out.

I talked to a supervisor there, Roxy, who told me that she didn’t personally find the fact that my gamer tag had gay in the name offensive, but that the greater Xbox community did, so I would have to change it. I hope I'm not the only person who finds this don’t ask, don't tell policy disgusting… eek."

This reminds me a lot of an instance a few years back where World of Warcraft developers Blizzard Entertainment disbanded a guild from within the game close-minded players complained about the fact that it was being openly promoted as a guild for gay people.

There was so much controversy stirred amongst the community over the incident that the Blizzard was eventually forced to change the game's official rules to be far more accepting of the expression of sexual preference by other players.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if this ends up coming back to bite Microsoft as well.

I really hope Microsoft gets screwed over royally for this disgusting BS.
There is nothing wrong with that tag except in the minds of closed minded idiots who can't accept anyone different to themselves.

I just don't understand people. What the hell is wrong about being gay and obviously being proud of it? This is like fanboyism taken to an extreme.

Being completely impartial to either side here, there are arguments for both.
This person, as does everyone on XBL, pays good money for the right to play
online. As such, one could argue that we all are owed the right to call ourselves whatever we like.

On the other hand, if Microsoft allows someone to use ANY gamertag they
like, then things could get out of hand. You might have someone mucking
about calling themselves all sorts of horribly offensive things, so the big M
is trying to keep things as civil and enjoyable as possible for everyone.

Now, I see nothing wrong with this gamertag in particular, but it is up to
Microsoft to set the rules, and if you want to play on their system, you kind
of have to abide by the policies they have set forth. Yes, it's your money,
but you do sign an agreement when you first set up your account.

Personally, I think Microsoft needs to work harder on curtailing verbal abuse
and such than worrying about what someone may call themselves online.

But it's not Microsoft who's made the complaint. It's "the greater community", meaning just regular people.

People by default are close minded idiots.

Remember the IQ of a group of people is the IQ of th dumbest person divided by the number of people in the group.

I don't blame Microsoft for this... They're just trying to please the majority; which is basically a bunch of homophobes who are "offended" by the word "gayer".

And it makes me really sad/sick that those people are still in majority.

Well then ban "straightgamer" too. Oh and "bigamer" and "lesbiangamer" and then maybe just "gamer" or something else that might offend any number of the sorts of people who have too much time on their hands. I don't care if M feels they need to bend to pressure given by a few homophobes. Nothing this gentleman is doing is harming anyone and so he should have the right to name himself whatever he wishes, within *reasonable* reason.

Although I must admit, I don't get why he named himself that. I don't flaunt that I'm straight; don't know why he flaunts that he's gay either. Sexual orientation is something that's neither to be proud or ashamed of--it's who you are, IMO.
