I remember showing this to Corrine the other day. We couldn't help but laugh when we saw the results. The World of Warcraft gap is crazy. As much as I love the game, it's still insane, and a tad off the top. No game should dominate a market that heavily. I LOLed @ Runescape. |

Truely unsurprising. I remember last years chart with web based MMO's and "kiddy" MMO's on it and Lineage was pretty far back. Le sigh to the MMO future.

One of the things I wonder is if they had taken into consideration of multiple accounts on WoW and people paying subscriptions to different games.
|
By: EvilxBunny On: 12:21 Feb 18th, 2008 Offline |
of course not | |||
|
By: Dragonfly On: 01:53 Feb 18th, 2008 Offline |
I don't follow the "paying subscription to different games", but the chart is specifically about active, recurring payment accounts. I don't know about you, but I don't know anyone with multiple accounts, and the spam in WoW at least right now is almost completely non-existent. Interesting was the lack of Guild Wars in that list, but I'd assume that's because it doesn't require a direct subscription. Neither do some of the titles on there, but it's one title that definately deserve credit. |

by different subscriptions, I mean the people who play WoW but still have friends on Everquest or something who still go on there every now and then for sentimental reasons. Good to know on the recurring bit though. |

I have 2 wow accounts.. both were active at the same time for awhile, but neither of them are.. and i gave one of them away.. so now i have 1 ;p |

I think the reason we aren't seeing any of the free MMOs on there is that the rating chart is going by monitary gain. It's sad too as I know a ton of folks on Maple Story and Guild Wars. I really hope a new MMO comes and cuts the stranglehold that WoW has on the market. (I'm looking at you Warhammer Online) |

That doesn't surprise me, mainly because most people who have one online game, will usually have had, or have a WoW account to go with it. Most people I know who have a FFXI account, also have a WoW, same with guild wars. WoW has an amazing following, just becuase the story/quests are good, and you can make some amazing friends. There's also brand loyalty from previous Warcraft games. |

What Story? and the quests are so goddamn lame! Go to the forest and kill tigers and bring me 9 of their teeth.. hrm okay... theres ALOT of toothless tigers out there. For a majority of the game.. prolly even higher level quests, your a fucking errand boy. The friends thing is the most messed up.. because the game is SOOO easy... everyone has numerous chars. EVERY friend iive made on that game ive never seen on past the first time we met... and i do mean never. |

i'm going to say this one more time, and one more time only. Stop attacking everyone who likes WoW. It's completely unwarranted, and not acceptable behaviour. This is not a request, and I don't want you filling up this thread responding to this comment. You know where the PM box is. There's plenty of story. Go read http://www.wowwiki.com and read up on it, instead of being a constantly overbearing elitist snob.
I'll tell you how easy the game is once I've taken down Kil'Jaedon and received my legendary bow. WoW has accessible content, and content that requires months of time and dedication. *THAT* is what sets it apart from the "hardcore" RPG. Most people don't want to play a game that's a chore.
- Those are almost exclusively trail accounts. - They're usually banned on sight, so they can't be recurring subscribers. |

I play XI.. where to get anywhere takes more than months of work... and its still not a chore.. its fun! Combat is fun, partying is fun.. you keep the friends you make, MUCH more to explore and do. (compared to wow)

By: Dragonfly On: 11:47 Feb 19th, 2008 Offline |
It wasn't fun for me, and it clearly wasn't fun for a few million other players. |

most people dont even give it a chance past level 5
|
By: Dragonfly On: 11:51 Feb 19th, 2008 Offline |
I didn't give it a chance past level 1. I was playing for three days straight, and it was a cluttered, bloated, badly constructed, terribly organised, horrible looking, unfairly punishing mess. But that's just me. |

Im suprised Runescape is still up ther since they messed it up big time by takin out the PvP in the wildy and all. Iv heard of an online Lord of the rings game and now theres Warhammer online but where the hell is Warhammer40K?:disgust: All i can say is that WoW is pretty much dominating the charts. |
|||
|
By: Dragonfly On: 11:56 Feb 19th, 2008 Offline |
If any title is likely to knock WoW off the charts, it's Warhammer. Who knows, maybe Warhammer 40K will be an expansion pack of it's own? *laughs* |
|||
|
By: Black Templar On: 12:05 Feb 19th, 2008 Offline |
No Warhammer40K and Warhammer are almost totally different from each other. 40K is based in the 41st millenium with giant titans and 8ft tall super humans and Warhammer is based god knows how long before that with wizards and catapults. But i do hope they make Warhammer online good so they will hopefully make 40K online. |

Cluttered? Horibble looking? Badly Constructed? unorganized? i beg to differ. its a Menu based MMO and this game as proved it is possible and shows how successful.. the game is a crap ton more detailed, and even more anatomically correct than WoW.. the game.. the story.. everything about it kicks WoWs ass. Im not gonna be one of the losers that choose WoW over everything else because its popular, im gonna choose what i like cuz i like it |

I like playing World of Warcraft because the people I play with make it fantastic. Though, there are the not so lovable ones there. That goes for e-life in a whole, so I can't really exclude tards to just WoW. UO was fun. :o That was the only other MMO I played seriously. I've tried some others like City of Villains and a half of a shot at Vanguard (my boyfriend actually tried it, I didn't like it though.) I'm usually very picky about what I spend my time doing, and though it's true that WoW does dominate the charts, I still enjoy playing it for my own reasons. Not because everyone and their mom plays it and not because it grew into a fad. |

Are you implying that my choice of WOW is anything other than carefully considered and actually based on playing the titles that interest me? My time is very limited as I am on a very coarsework heavy course, so I want an MMO I can play for either 20-30 mins or 36 hours straight. Very few other games allow that, and that includes anything not just MMO's. |
|||
|
By: Evren On: 11:06 Feb 20th, 2008 Offline |
I didnt choose WoW because it was popular, but because I enjoyed the gameplay completely. *smiles* Just like you. So really. You're saying the same as us. |

I play WoW because the story fascinates me. There are boring parts, but the good outweighs the small things I have a problem with... it's engaging, I can solo or take part in group stuff, etc. I would probably not play if I didn't have a regular partner to play with, but I don't *need* one. FFXI you NEED a party... plus, I'm not paying 12 bucks + my XBL subscription to play it on the 360. My coworkers wanted me to join. I read up on it. Decided "fuck that!" |
|||
|
By: EvilxBunny On: 03:56 Feb 20th, 2008 Offline |
you dont need to pay for XBL gold to play FFXI on 360.. and i dont pay $12 a month to play online.. like in WoW. i went from 1-30 (thats as far as i got before i decided it was the biggest waste of money ever) without a group.. becuase everyone wants to solo shit.

When exactly did you decide to take on the entirety of VGC and call out all the WoW players? Your presumptuous ideas of all WoW players isn't getting you anywhere. Just chill about it. Listen to Michael. I am kind of excited for Warhammer Online. I want to play the beta but my desktop PC is currently without internet so I can't try the beta. I wouldn't put to much hope in Warhammer Online though. I distinctly remember this kind of attitude toward Vangaurd before it came out. We all know the results of that. I would like to see a game ACTUALLY compete on WoW's level for once. It seems like to many devs are trying to make hard core MMO's, Kiddy MMO's, or blatant WoW copy's. Thats my perception from the sidelines. |

I'm going to step in for my boyfriend and say: What says you about Age of Conan?!
|
By: SwitchxA On: 06:02 Feb 20th, 2008 Offline |
From what I have seen of Age of Conan it looks really promising. I am thinking and hoping it could be just as awesome as it sounds. It's definitely something different to the MMO landscape.

AGE OF CONAAAAAAAAAAAN. The main game to sweep me from WoW. totally unique gameplay along with it. Guild towns/raids/wars. What more can I say? Btw, I'm in beta for Warhammer. Very interesting. RvR combat finally being rezzed since DaoC. |

I may quit WoW for Age of Conan, but I don't know about Warhammer. I've seen you play it, but it doesn't give me that "ooh wow" feeling like AoC. Also, I will be playing Wrath of the Lich King, no matter what you say. >( |
|||
|
By: EvilxBunny On: 12:48 Feb 21st, 2008 Offline |
I think AoC has the biggest chance of taking the lead. The gameplay is 80% based on skill. If you move away from an attack, you dont get damaged. Also they are adding player built cities, making the world nearly endless... *goes to try to find a video of that* http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/21148 There should be a video on that site... a direct link... it adds so much to the gameplay ;p. |
