The tyranny of two-dimensional computer and TV displays could soon be over. A team of MIT researchers has proposed a way to make a holographic video system that works with computer hardware for consumers, such as PCs with graphics cards and gaming consoles. The display, the researchers say, will be small enough to add to an entertainment center, provide resolution as good as a standard analog television, and cost only a couple hundred dollars.

I am beside myself as I ponder the sheer possibilities (Lara Croft viewable from many angles in midair? *devious nerdy grin*) of this technology. Imagine the games we currently consider to be 3D, which are really simply games programmed in environments that give the illusion of depth on a flat television screen, only played on a display that actually is viewable from any angle. It boggles the mind. I hope this comes out yesterday. And for only a couple hundred bucks? To give you an idea what this might look like, I've provided the following link. Bear in mind that it represents a similar technology, but not the exact product mentioned in the article.

There's one part here which really kills it for me.
"Pictures as good as analogue televisions".
That's hardly high quality, is it? Especially with two of the next generation of consoles employing high defintion technology.
Still, it sounds like an interesting idea, even if the price is a little too steep. I'm genuinely interested to see how ingame 3-D grraphics would tranfer to a real 3-D image. Done right, it could offer a great degree of extra immersion to a lot of games. |

This sounds most intriguing though I'm hesistant to say I'm excited. Gaming should become an experience but just how immersed should we be? I mean at what point does gaming stop being gaming and start being a way of life? I love my games, I really do, but not to the point of getting so very involved.
Of course if a person is able to differeinate between holo and real then this could actually become quite the hit. |
