Square Enix makes move to buy out Tecmo

Following the surprising news this morning that Square Enix is planning a serious move to buy out Japanese games developer Tecmo, the company has responded with a statement saying that it's offering a 30 percent premium on the targe's stock.

"Square Enix has released a statement explaining his Tecmo takeover plan. It includes offering to purchase a controlling interest in Tecmo by purchasing shares in that company at 30 percent premium (¥960 a share compared to yesterday’s close price of ¥706 a share). The Tecmo Board of Directors has until September 4 to approve or reject this offer. If rejected, Square states, "We will withdraw our offer."

Tecmo is a Japanese games developer with a long history in the industry, responsible for such prolific titles as Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Monster Rancher, Rygar, and Fatal Frame.

If this buyout goes ahead, it'll certainly add some interesting titles to the House of Squenix.

*laughs*

That'll be quite the sight.

I don't know whether to like this or not. More titles in SE is good, but any sort of monopolizing isn't so good. oO

That isnt a monopoly! The companies are also still intact, just underneath Square Enix... Not only do the companies get more money that way, they also get better funding. The quality of games from Enix and Taito have undoubtly went up since Square merged with them.

I think Dragonsoul was making a comparison to EA and Actiblizzard. While EA did have a run of REALLY bad game for a while I think the larger gaming conglomerates are getting smarter with how they manage the subsidiaries. More individual expression from those companies and less merging into a big blob.

I agree with bunny though that since Enix and Taito were bought we have got some good games. How Tecmo is going to continue the Ninja Gaiden and DoA series without Itagaki or even if they will is a little more interesting to me.

Can't wait to see where this may lead, shame it comes after the departure of Itagaki though.
