Miyamoto: About Wii and the Gaming Industry

In an interesting interview with legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, the industry icon behind Mario and Zelda, he released a few very interesting facts related to the Wii.

One of the provoking things he spoke about in this interview was that the Wii was hoped to have old gamecube games eventually released upon it. Sadly, no titles were discussed, but the pure knowledge that Gamecube games will be made for the Wii because of the console's unique controls makes many anticipate the titles that will soon to be released.

In further news, Miyamoto discussed many thought provoking notions about Nintendo in general. Everyone knows that it has been some time since Nintendo has been in first place among many gamers, and Miyamoto seemed to take this into consideration. The reason for this? Miyamoto believes it is the fact that gaming in general has lost place in the real world. He feels that games need to range to capture more audiences, more ages, more types of people. Of course, the core of the gaming audience will not be forgotten, but many people seem to complain that games are either too hard or have nothing to do with their life.

Miyamoto says many game designers are asking the wrong questions while they are creating. Miyamoto says, "... people in the industry ask, 'Will simulations catch on after the RPG boom?' 'What genre is the game play?' 'Who made it?' We've lost sight of essential enjoyment, which is the basis of gaming. In developing the Wii, we asked ourselves once more, 'What kind of game console do people want in their homes?'"

As broken as the gaming industry seems, Miyamoto believes you have to break everything you have ever known and build up from scratch once again. That is the only way, he says, that you can create challenges and new types of game play, and that is what Nintendo is hoping they did with the Wii.

That has to be one of the truest things ever said. People keep talking about how gaming is getting more and more focus in the public eye, but the truth of the matter is that less people are actually interested in gaming now than they were in, most specifically, the SNES era. Afor once, nostalgia has nothing to do with it.

We were all satisfied with a game that could be completed in about three hours, but still required skill to actually complete. We didn't need 100 long RPG with 30 minute cutscenes between every battle, or intricate battles system that took months to perfect.

Now, I'm not saying there isn't a place for those games, for the gamers that want them, but they should not be where the all the focus is going, as Miyamato said himself.

Nintendo pulled it off with the DS. They created a portable system with fun games that you can just pick up, play, enjoy, then put away when it suits you. I've had people young and old come up to me and want to give my DS a play, and many of them are captivated by it. Some even go so far as to buy one for themselves afterwards.

I haven't seen this much excitement about games amongst the general public since... well... yes, the SNES days. Where family, friends, kids, grandparents and everyone else under the sun actually took an interest... nor have I see games fly so quickly off the shelves - bar the rare Halo, GTA etc. exceptions.

Nintendo are clearly trying to pull the same trick twice with the Wii. Only time will tell if it's a gamble that will pay off though, but I certainly hope it does. Even I'm starting to get bored of gaming in general...
