Crackdown, the Xbox360 game, has won the innovation prize at the Develop Awards. This award is voted by worldwide game developers in recognition of the work needed to create a game.

Crackdown has been one of the most celebrated titles of 2007. It was designed by David Jones, of Real Time Worlds, who helped create Lemmings and arguably Sony Playstation's best selling series, Grand Theft Auto.

Sony had no need to feel left out. They won the Grand Prix award for overall excellence, while Evolution Studios' Motorstorm, for PlayStation 3, won the best new franchise prize. The winners were chosen by a jury of 100 industry experts brought together by Develop magazine from the four corners of the world.

"The fact that no one company dominated the awards this year shows what a diverse range of talent this industry boasts," said Michael French, editor of Develop Magazine.
"It's been a brilliant year for games, with new hardware allowing developers to really stretch their imagination with new ways to play - so competition for these prestigious awards has been fiercer than ever."

Eden Games, the french developers, won the award for the best use of online for test Drive Unlimited, whilst Rare's Viva PiƱata took the prize for visual arts. Ian Hetherington, co-founder of the 1980s games firm Psygnosis, and ex managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, was crowned Development Legend.
He is currently chairman of Evolution Studios and Real Time Worlds.

I wouldn't say it's been a brilliant year. It's been more soso. There have been a few worthy games but honestly, if I hadn't gotten a Wii for free, I wouldn't have bought one and I probably won't be buying a 360 or PS3 for a long time if ever. Nothing's really exciting thus far.

My personal thoughts?

Crackdown is a very expansive game which does present a great number of improvements to the free roaming sandbox genre, and deserves to be remembered as a true classic... but most innovative title of the year? I simply can't agree.

That said, it's a been a bit of a "meh" year, with a lot of this year's biggest and most groundbreaking titles yet to even see release. The point about hardware progression is true, but it's so early in the show for it to really impact on the games, and I think it's going to be at least another four months before we see anything impressive enough to beat 2004.

xD when I first read the title, I thought I read 'Breakdown' lol silly me.

this game is actually REALLY fun. its like playing a superman game thats actually fun and not retarded. The way they handle gaining exp and scoring is superb, and literally anything is terrain. You usually see all the super tall buildings and stuff in the background (usually something like an image posted on the sky to look distant and is usually unreachable), but there aren't any in Crackdown. You can climb to on top of the needle on top of the tallest building in the game, which takes about 10-15 minutes of straight climbing, might I add. (Even with super jumps 20 feet in the air, its still quite a climb) which adds to the unbelievably huge map you can roam around freely on (on foot or by car).

but I do agree with WoI. It'll take a while to beat 2004. This game is really good and expansive, but not as good as people claim it is, nor in my opinion does it even come close to some of the games released before (as far as how great the games are for the new gen of systems)
