"Hollywood is afraid of video games," believes Sam Houser

Speaking in this month's issue of Playboy (yes, there is text in the magazine), Rockstar boss and Grand Theft Auto creator Dan Houser expressed the said that the film industry doesn't wholly gaming mainly because it believe that they are a threat to its audience.

"It's about economics," he explained. "We take market share and audience from other media - videogame makers are challenging the Hollywood hegemony - so they’re going to fight us. But I’m not going to fight them. I believe your Constitution protects us."

"These are works of fiction," he said. "Playing a game that features violence is no different from choosing to see a violent movie. We’re not trying to create a 'here's real life' sensation in a video game; it's "you’re the star of a movie. We want to re-create the sensations you have watching movies. We’re putting those in a video game."

It's difficult to disagree with the name; as they become increasingly popular and more dynamic, the interactive nature of video games offer a degree of experience that the more passive nature of the movie industry is unable to provide, and it can only continue to get bigger.

What do you think?

I think that last line about video gaming offering something different and more than the passiviness of a movie is an entirely excellent point. Movies can only draw you in so much by sight and sound; it lacks the dynamic interactivity of gaming. And with society getting more and more sophisciated (to a degree) with their choices in entertainment gaming will continue to take a larger chunk of the entertainment market.

I think we'll see gaming having an even greater influence on society in the coming ten or twenty years. I'm very excited to see what happens next with it. ^___^

I am not sure. It's not really a choice of do I go watch the new movie this weekend or buy the newest game release. It's just picking which experience entices you more and that's not limited by an either or choice. So many people enjoy both mediums and their shouldn't be a problem between the two.

Media does not replace media it only creates more types, but still both survive.

With the latest MGS having a 90 minute cut scene, you can see why the film industry is dubious.
