Playstation 3 and XBox 360 owners got a taste of the latest Turok release recently thanks to the latest Playstation Network and Xbox Live update.
This review will cover the PS3 version of the demo.
So being the large fan of FPS's that I am I downloaded it to give it a whirl. I must say I'm not all that impressed. Firstly, the beginning of the demo was underground inside a cave and the gameplay was so dark it made it difficult to enjoy the graphics. Once you do get outside into the jungle however, the graphics are great and are on par with many of the other first person shooters available to date.
You mostly encounter "raptors" during the demo and it becomes very redundant very soon. I felt like it was more of a Haunted House than a video game as the "raptors" come out at pre-determined points throughout the demo and many tomes they hit you from the back or the side. This results mostly in your character falling backwards and gets frustratingly annoying very soon.
I must say I appreciated the game much more once I left the cave and emerged into the jungle and could actually see what was going on. This is also where one gets to encounter the other 2 types of Dinosaur. Firstly you see what Jurassic Park would have referenced as "Compys" which are chicken-sized runts that pose almost no threat... but are very fun for target practice with your Halo 2 esque dual wielding weapons system.
This brings me to my next point: the weapons available in the demo:
1: Your knife (with two types of thrusts via alt-fire)
2: A Compound Bow (somewhat useful with the zoom)
3: Submachine Gun (again very Halo 2 ish)
4: Shotgun (nothing fancy.. a shotgun)
5: Grenades.. again not too fancy.
So I don't want to tell everyone EVERYTHING about the demo but if you like Turok you will probably appreciate the demo. It honestly reminded me of Jericho more than anything and if you want to take the time to download it (over a gig) go ahead.
I'd love to hear someone else's impression(s).

I have to say, I was actually quite impressed.
Gaming has come a long way since the original Turok, and this a very refreshing change in game mechanics. There's a big difference between fighting humans and... well... dangerous killer dinosaurs.
I think they captured their sense of movement and nature extremely well, and it does make for a unique experience in itself (especially on a 32" HD-TV. *grins* ) , but yet, there can be a sense of repetition that can grate on you.
If the full game can keep things varied though, I think this will turn out pretty well. It's definately worth a rental, at least. |

I actually had higher hopes for the game, but maybe the final version will be a little brighter and less full of repetition. But like Michael said, I definitely will rent this game. I was pretty interested it when reading the description somewhere. |

While I agree that the dinosaur fighting IS cool, it still wasn't enough to keep me excited for the games release....(not even on my 42" HD LCD w/ambilight). That is however ONLY my personal opinion, and I still encourage other gamers to ALWAYS try and get their own opinion as wel. |
