It's been rumoured for months. Fans have been speculating, guessing, second-guessing, hoping and wishing. And now, it has finally been confirmed... Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be fully playable online over the Nintendo Wi-Fi network!
You may all rejoice now.
The news was announced on the game's
official site, where Nintendo, who have otherwise kept very quiet in regards to online play for the game up until now, informed fans that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be playable online from launch. The site also detailed what form online gameplay would take.
On the basic cutomisation front, you will be able to select from a wide range of Nintendo themed icon to represent you in online play, as well as your name; that's about it. Your game code will also be seperate from your default Wii Code, which may disappoint some gamers hoping to build up a comprehensive list of friends between all their games, ala Xbox Live.
"With Anyone" will allow you to join free matches with any players online at the time, even if they are not on your friends list. The matches will be completely anonymous, with no names, and strangely enough, no records. All forms of communication will also be disabled in this mode; Nintendo are clearly playing it safe and not taking any risks with this one.
"With Friends" is thankfully a little more lax, but will require you to know the people you're playing against, as the name kind of gives away. Voice chat isn't available, but users will be able to shout out pre-entered taunts as a limited form of communication whilst battling out against their friends in two-way, three-way, or four-way battles.
Oh, and you get to beat up a punching bag with eyes while you wait for the game to load. Cute, Nintendo.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is due out for the Wii on December 3rd. Expect me to be hunting down every last Pikachu player that I can find...

Congratulations on the 30,000 post.
And this is great news! I actually might pick up the game, after hearing this. We'll see. It sounds like a fun time, especially with online play. I bet you're all nerdgasming over this. |

If there wasn't a reason for me to have a Wii until now, this would have to be my decider. Anonymous battles would be interesting if they're random... I hate going to game servers and seeing the same 'leet' players all of the time. I'd still like to be in the same room as my friends for gaming, but still, the friends options look GREAT. Any idea if 2 people can play off one console in the friends match? I assume random would be a no since it would be unfair, but friends should be able to... hopefully. |

The official information of the sort didn't state anything of the sort, and it doesn't seem like there's anything of the type implemented in the screenshots... but it woul be really, really stupid if they didn't.
In fact, it makes me wonder they don't do that more with other games... |
