Now that the
eleven years long rumours of a
NiGHTS into Dreams sequel have been confirmed, Sega have finally come forward on the game's official European website to elaborate on a number of details about the upcoming game, including its official title.
The NiGHTS into Dreams sequel will carry the title NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams when it hits store shelves sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.
On the gameplay front, it appears that little has changed, which will be a blessing to many fans of the game no doubt, but the most significant change is the addition of persona masks, which will allow NiGHTS to shapeshift into new forms, granting him new abilities and exploration possibilities.
Sounds like a bit of s rip off of Majora's Mask? It may not be as superficial as it sounds. The dragon mask, for instance, will allow NiGHTS to pass through strong winds in the sky, and the dophin mask will allow NiGHTS to take his travel into a new direction entirely - through the sea.
Unfortunately, Sega failed to mention how exactly these masks would be implemented into the gameplay, so we'll just have to wait to find out more.
One of the most original additions to the game is one that harks back to the original in a number of fashion. Fans will recall the game's unique artificial life (A-Life) in the form of the Nightopians, and their capacity to alter the game's music depending on their moods. Although no words have been made on the existance of this feature in the upcoming sequel, Sega are looking at a vastly more ambitious way of evolving the gameworld as you play... in the form of weather.
Implementing the Wii's WiiConnect24 capabilities, and the console's Forecast Channel, the gameworld will see itself change according to real world seasons. Sega have revealed no more details on this feature, but it's certainly an ambitious idea nevertheless, which could add a huge layer of visual depth to the gameplay if it's handled well.
Sadly, that probably means there won't be any chance of a Christmas NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams then (see below for the original). We can only dream.

Shiiiit. Eleven years? That's a long time to wait for a sequel. Sounds like an interesting game, particularly the mask ability mentioned though with no access to a Wii I won't get to see it even if it manages to jump over development hell hurdle.
Dammit, time for me to get a Wii. Hey, that rhymes! |
