Rock Band On Tour

The beauty of music and rhythm games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band is that they help players to live out their own secret rock God fantasies. Grasping a GH controller and strumming away, or in the case of Rock Band, pounding away on the skins or singing your lungs out, takes the air guitar and shower solos to a whole new level of fun.

Now, imagine if you will taking the feelings these games elicit to the next level by performing in front of thousands as the opening act for some famous band. Talk about pressure. Imagine no longer. MTV, who purchased GH series collaborator Harmonix, has plans in the works to do just that. They're taking Rock Band on the road, and we're all invited to tag along.

Starting at this year's MTV Video Music Awards show, EA and MTV will be taking Rock Band on the road with a fleet of buses with Rock Band stations installed in each. From the MTVMA's, the mobile gaming stations will embark on a nationwide tour, and players will be given the opportunity to compete in a "Battle of the Bands" of sorts, with the performances being videotaped and judged.

The two best performances will see each of the "bands" flown to New York to perform on MTV's TRL, with the better of the two given the opportunity to open for an as yet unnamed top tier band at the official Rock Band Launch Event/Concert. No pressure, though.

One things for sure, Electronic Arts know how to do it big.

That said, with such huge scale events as this, which are almost guaranteed to win over music-lovers and casual consumers alike, it makes me fearful of the future of the Guitar Hero franchise
