If your a Phantasy Star fan then you should have heard about the new Phantasy Star Portable game coming to PSP. If you don't keep up with Japanese releases then maybe you haven't heard. Either way SEGA is bringing the next chapter of the Phantasy Star Universe series to handhelds and is not holding back and punches.
The demo is one of the best I have played on the PSP. Being quite large at 300MB the demo offers a FMV cutscene, in game cutscenes, a large amount of voice acting, two missions, and plenty of text to be confused over. You may be confused because the demo is in Japanese only. While I don't know much I was able to figure everything out besides what they were saying. The game speaks for itself though. The combat is just like Universe, and the two missions you can go on offer various amounts of difficulty and even a boss to try.
When you get done with the single player mode you can transfer your character to multiplayer mode where you can fight alone or with friends. Multiplayer mode offers more content allowing you to reach level 20 which culminates in a battle with De Ragan who some may remember from Phantasy Star Universe.
Now this all wouldn't be very fun with a pre-made generic character, so before you start you get to create your own personalized character. The system is very robust allowing you customize anything from eyebrows to cheek bone structure. Where colors are concerned you are given a color palette allowing you choose from hundreds of colors, hues, and tints. I personally recreated Liquid Ocelot from MGS4 in hot pants. The possibilities are vast.
Phantasy Star Portable is set to release in Japan on July 31, 2008. Unfortunately release outside of Japan has not been announced. For now you can check out the demo at the link below.
Demo Download
Unzip the file and place the folder in the PSP/Game folder of your memory card. It should show up under memory card in XMB when your done.

This is excellent I got really addicted to universe and I was annoyed I couldn't play it online. So hears to a European release.
It is nice to see such a game released on PSP as like the MHF series this style of gameplay works well on this handheld. |

I had my doubts too, but after playing it I want more. I wasn't a big Phantasy Star fan either, but I would like to play some PSU. Only that sucks is that the game only works in Local for multiplayer. I imagine that won't hinder it to much considering how well MH2ndG does. |

Played it a little and it's not bad.
No free roaming in the space station that's all flicking from one character to the next or to exists or other areas etc. In missions it is just the same as PSU so the battle aspect seems to be exactly the same.
Character creatio is good about the same amount as I remember.
A tad hard getting about in Japanese but I managed to get to Act 2.
This game seems like it's going to be for groups of friends with PSPs who liked PSU. |
