Rumours of a sequel to the legendary Saturn game 'NiGHTS into Dreams' are nothing new. But if all the signs are to be believed, the thought no longer sits in the realm of speculation, and the gaming equivalent of the 2nd Coming will soon be upon us, as the purple harlequin glides his/her way into our dreams once more.
Demands for a sequel to the cult classic has been huge for years, and rumours of a potential sequel have been mounting since the beginning of 2007, with much speculation of the series appearing on Nintendo's Wii console.
Although the game's original creator Yuji Naka has regularly stated that he has no intention of revisiting the franchise, has since announced his intention to create his own development studio independent of Sega and Sonic Team. Other recent rumours suggest that a designer "who created a famous bearded character" is "creating a game featuring a flying clown".
In the March 2007 issue of Official Nintendo Magazine, a preview page was printed with the words "a classic game makes a long overdue return", under the image of a constellation of stars. Though nowhere in the picture does it openly state the game will be night, fans have composite the outline of the constellation with a famous render of the game's lead character, NiGHTS, which shows them to match. Pictures of this can be seen below.
All these are just rumours of course. However, Swedish magazine GameReactor recently unveiled the cover of their next issue, which offers
undeniable proof of the existence of the upcoming NiGHTS sequel. The cover has since been taken down after some angry words from Sega, and replaced with a silhouetted version of the same image. Both covers can be seen below.
Sega have offered no official word on the existence of this game, and have refused contact with major publications and websites on the subject. One must fear that Sega have let too many cats out of the bag with this one though. Unless this is the most elaborate and well conceived April Fool's joke ever, or gamers are in for one of the greatest moments in gaming history; the return of NiGHTS.
Naoto Ohshima - 1996: "For children that have trouble getting to sleep, if people say to them that if they sleep now they'll be able to meet NiGHTS that would be great."
Yuji Naka - 1996: "When you have a dream, you forget all about it after you wake up. But if you have NiGHTS, you can realize a dream forever. There is NiGHTS in everybody and if you show courage, you can fly like NiGHTS."
One of gaming's most imaginative visions is set to return to us soon. Only in our wildest dreams could we imagine such a thing, but then, that's always been where NiGHT's has felt most at home.

I'm excited for this =) NiGHTS was only the best Saturn game EVER, and to see a sequel will be grand! Just so long as Sonic Team doesn't try to tamper with the original gameplay, I'll be happy.
I like NiGHTS' new look =) |
