It wouldn't be a Final Fantasy if it didn't look insanely beautiful.

Which they do all three.

I agree that they look great... But the more screenies I see, the more I dislike the fact that it looks like FFXII.

It's not bad stylistically, but I'm just used to the radical aesthetical changes from game to game. This isn't set in Ivalice is it?

It looks like Final Fantasy XII? Are you crazy? The character design is done by Tetsuya Nomura, who designed the characters for FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, and for the Kingdom Hearts series.

Take the beanie hat off that guy in the above pictures, and he looks practically like Seifer.

Honestly, I'm used to the lack of aesthetic changes in the Final Fantasy games. It's always the same old derivative character designs, with FFIX and FFXII really being the only ones to break the mold significantly.

But don't worry, it's not set on Ivalice. Nomura doesn't "do" Ivalice.

Lightning has always looked like Ashe to me. The redhead is Penelo-ish.
I'll give you the Seifer looking guy.

And I still disagree about the last part. VII, VIII & IX were all VASTLY different stylistically, IMO.

Thats because Ivalice is a high quality amazing world with the deepest history of any FF world because of the amount of games set there and is in many ways the perfect FF setting and has high quality written all over it.

So obviously the name Nomura doesn't come into it.

Yeah I am an Ivalice fanboy.

oh and Lightning is a pixel for pixel female version of Cloud.

I don't see it. Every Final Fantasy since VII (bar IX) has had "up-beat young teenage girl with cute looks". Yuffie. Selphie. Rikku. Penelo. She just seems like another in a long line.

Lightning's design is one I have to admit I quite like though. Most of Nomura's designs are horrible repetitive of each other, so it's nice to see if come up with something original once in a while.

Tranformer-Summons isn't enough of a stylistic diversion?

Shiva Motorcycle!

Lightning actually reminds me a bit of Gunslinger Yuna.

I guess everyone sees her a bit differently. *laughs*

You can't tell me that the clothing style is not at all similar.
(Except of course that Lightning is less of a hobag)

I have it! Lightning is the love child of Cloud and Ashe! Dammit, someone write the fic, plox.

I see nothing particularly wrong with the character designs so far, though I do agree that they do look on the angsty side.

I can agree about the FFXII but...FFIX? That game was specifically made to be a character copy of games of old. Hell, Vivi's literally a direct character lift from FF1!

You're the fanfic writer here.

This may be true, but you have to remember that those designs were invented by the franchise in the first place. And the variations on the designs of things like the black mage were incredibly details.

The world in which FFIX was set was one of is major highlights, very understated by varied and down to earth. It also had the strongest supporting cast of any title franchise, in my opinion.
