Mortal Kombat's New Style

That’s what is reported of the newest addition to the Mortal Kombat franchise. As said by Ed Boon, the Mortal Kombat creator, it is to be “grittier” and “dirtier” and “more serious”. How exactly these terms factor into the graphics and gameplay have not been determined as the game is not rumored to be released until late 2008.

While it’s to still essentially be a fighter-type game there will be some changes. This may include the removal of the weapons and fighting style systems that have been used in past games. In place of this will perhaps be a batch of new characters created to appear as realistic as possible.

Lastly, Boon mentioned that they would be working on making the PS3’s controller’s motion sense functionality compatible with the game. Considering the date of release it appears this building up from block one will be quite the task but this could be an indication of how very many changes will we see.

Bad, bad idea.

Mortal Kombat has always been about its comic value. Making the violence "serious" and "gritty" is going to take away from the serie's appeal IMMENSELY.

What next? Sub-Zero in bling?
