Mirror's Edge: Fighting Simulation Sickness

DICE is already crafting solutions that appears could be a significant problem when the game Mirror's Edge is released--Simulation Sickness. This is similar to actual Motion Sickness, only since you're not actually moving it's a trick of the mind that's causing the unwanted side effect as was experienced recently by some testers.

Among the solutions is the use of a white "blip", used to distract your mind while you're in "motion". This is similar to how ballerinas' concentrate on an single object to take their mind off their movement. In fact, it was actual ballerinas that DICE got the idea from. If undesired and/or unneeded, there's an option to turn it off.

Another issue resolved was of the "head bob" that came from a view from your head, not your eyes, which has been reportedily rectified. Even the sides of the screen can be used for a more proper sense of vision.

On a personal note, I wonder if this will cause a similar mishap that occured with Kid Icarus. Will this game have actual physical ramifications to its realism?

Of course, considering that, you can't get greater realism than that.

What was the problem with Kid Icarus? [/is young]

The same thing happened at Cloverfield; at least eight people, including my mother, walked out of the cinema five minutes in complaining of motion sickness. It's good that they're trying to counterract it, and I'd disagree with the 'greater realism' of the motion sickness. It's just a mind trick, and it is an effect that cannot be atributed to the motion replicated in the game; if you were to do it all yourself, you would not feel the motion sickness.

Yeah, never heard about that whole Kid Icarus thing. What's that all about?

Anyway, on the issue of Mirror's Edge, that doesn't surprise me. People seem to be complaining about the lack of realistic head bopping (even though it does move), but they seem to fail to realise that if they took that approach, anyone playing the game would throw up within two minutes of starting the game. *laughs*

The game's still looking epic.

IIRC, there was a case of epilepsy attributed to the game due to the combination of light and sound produced by the game. I think DICE should be careful if they don't want to encounter a similar problem.

Otherwise I still think the game's great and a real advancement in gaming technology. Considering we're coming to a new age in gaming, naturally new problems will arise. It's how these problems are handled that matters, not what they are in particular.
