Gears of War 2 will feature language and violence filters

Some interesting news about Gears of War 2 has been revealed today; it looks like Epic will be taking a unique approach to its violence and swearing.

The game, which will be released on November 7, recently received an "M" rating from the ESRB. Obviously, this limits the audience the game can be presented to. But what if the game was developed in a way that allowed the violence to be removed?

"Gears of War 2 will be released on November 7, but has already received an "M" rating from the ESRB, for "Blood and Gore," "Intense Violence," and "Strong Language." For many families, that may immediately eliminate it as a possibility as a holiday gift. However, a new point of negotiation will become a factor this year; Gears of War 2 includes filters for both the violence, and the language. Microsoft informs us that the violence filter "turns the blood into sparks," while the language filter "takes out all the swear words."

Although it wasn't clearly stated, it would be interesting to see if the title could automatically filter the content based on the age of the user. It would be unique approach that could alleviate a lot of the modern controversy surrounding video game violence nowadays.

Good idea if they can pull it off I think.

Though...Really, the kids of that age just shouldnt have the game, but MS are tackling it the right way, (As long as the kids have other accounts which wont let them change everything)

Gears of War had this feature, hidden somewhere deep within the options menu. I used to turn it on so my younger cousins could play.

That's an intelligent way of resolving the issue of content. My only concern would be if kids found a way to circumvent this safety measure, or if parents don't give a **** anyways, but that's the unfortunate reality of all solutions--nothing's ever foolproof anyways.

As the article mentions, there's also a filter for violence.

Of course, all of this is useless if parents can't be arsed to actually implement it.

I think its a smart little marketing move. The kids won't care but if it will convince a few parents to buy the game for their kids then MS came out looking smart.

wow, that web comic is awsome, if the filter did that in the game, I would buy the game to have colourfull effects fly every where when you touch bad guys

Everything is a marketing gimic, but if it makes some anti-game protesters happy that violence can somehow be avoided, but what is the point of the blood not squiting out of baddies if you chainsaw them?
