GC 2008 The House of the Dead: Overkill

Third-party publisher SEGA revealed The House of the Dead: Overkill, a new Wii-exclusive shooter based on the popular zombie franchise, on Tuesday. The game is being developed by Headstrong Games (Battalion Wars 1 & 2).

The new title sports a new pulp-style presentation, seemingly inspired by Grindhouse cinema. Features like grainy film filters, cheesy dialog, retro music and over the top blood and gore permeates the new title.

In addition to accurate shooting mechanics via the Wii remote's infrared tip, the game makes use of the device's built in accelerometer for new motion-based melee moves. Pistol whip or shotgun-butt a zombie and you'll be able to literally knock his jaw off or smash his skull.

You play as famous series hero Special Agent G on his first assignment. Fresh out of the AMS academy, G finds himself teamed with hard-boiled Detective Washington. When the two go to investigate a series of disappearances in small-town Louisiana, they soon discover that "blood-soaked mutant depravity" lurks in the streets and swamps of Bayou City.

Meh.

It looks okay, but I'm not expecting any sort of reinvention of the wheel with this.

It's basically a revival of the light-gun arcade games, at the same time being an attempt to attract more "mature" gamers to the Wii.
