Echochrome demo hits Japan

If you have been paying attention to future PS3 and PSP releases you may have heard of a little game called Echochrome. Today the demo was released in the Japanese Playstation Store. The good thing is if you have a PSP you can try it out too.

The good folks over at PSP Fanboy have posted a link to the demo file to download and all the instructions on how to install it. The demo is in apanese, but it's easy to pick up what the controls are and what is going on. While a Japanese release date of the full game has been set for March 19; a western release has not been confirmed.

The game is very minimalistic and focuses entirely on perspective. A small manikin walks around labyrinth-esque levels while you move the level around in any direction to get him from one point to another. If you block the view of a hole in the ground it becomes just a flat surface. The game requires you to look at a level from all angles and think entirely on perspective. It's a unique addition to Sony's line-up.

The demo and instructions can be found at: http://www.pspfanboy.com/2008/03/06/echochrome-downloadable-demo/

Note: You do not need a japanese PSP to play to demo. Your PSP will switch over to japanese when you load the demo and switch back to english when you go back to the XMB.

A gameplay video is below:

I feel for you Kelz. I have been borrowing a friends PSP and downloading all the demos from the Playstation Store. It was just good luck they happened to release the demo today. I only wish they had some more complex levels like they show in the trailer. :P

I have now played it and it is rather promising, although I agree that the levels a little simple to give you a propper feeling for it.

Why does this game strike me as a little reminiscent of Portal?

Why does this game strike me as a little reminiscent of Portal?

Probably because it takes the laws of mechanics and throws them on its head in a really unique fashion, and in the process redefining just what how far we can go with the video game medium.

Just a hunch.

Pretty funky what we can do with video games nowadays, huh? *laughs*

The music kinda makes me sleepy though, and I think the controls are a little clunky.

I've played it a bit more and I'm not sure on it, it might just be the fact it doesn't give you anything to sink your teeth into really, but it's just to simple.

The space invaders extreme demo is much more inticing to me, it gives a good feel for the game and last long enough to really make you want more. Especially since Shakuya pointed out that the action altered sound track makes it reminicent of Rez.
