Taking everybody by complete surprise, Irrational Games (2K Boston) decided last Saturday to make available on Xbox Live Marketplace a free downloadable demo of one of the most highly anticipated fps games in recent memory, Bioshock. The demo itself is about 1.2 gigs in size, which translates to roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour of gameplay.
The demo takes place in the game's opening level, and includes abilities which won't be available so early in the game in its retail release. Irrational Games head honcho Ken Lavine describe the demo as kind of a "director's cut" of the first level. He said it is his belief that if he is going to ask consumers to fork over sixty bucks for a game, then giving them a taste of the game and what's possible in it is the least he could do.
I wish more developers shared his opinion.
