Earlier today it was revealed that Universal Pictures and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski have signed a deal with publisher Take-Two to bring the acclaimed FPS BioShock to the movie screen.
"BioShock fans appreciate the depth and complexity of the game, and our partnership with Gore Verbinski will introduce the world of Rapture to an even wider audience," said 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann.
Verbinski has been set as director and producer, and John Logan, Academy Award-nominated writer of Gladiator, The Aviator and Sweeney Todd, is in discussion with Universal to pen the screenplay.
"In addition to his impressive body of work, Gore is an avid videogamer and true fan of BioShock. That was extremely important to us in deciding to move forward with this project."
"Our ability to attract a major studio and unparalleled creative team speaks volumes about the strength of our BioShock franchise," said Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick "It also demonstrates how Take-Two is delivering value based on our strategy of creating and owning our industry's most powerful intellectual property."
I'm a strong admirer of BioShock, and very appreciative of its mature storytelling and the unique experiences it provides for adult gamers, but I'm very hesitant about whether this can work.
BioShock provides a degree of storytelling and moral intelligence that most Hollywood movies never even come close to approaching. If they don't do this right, it will not only disgrace the game, but the gamers as well.
