BBFC refuses rating for Manhunt 2; still banned in UK

Rockstar Game's appeal on the British Board of Film Classification's ban of the original version of Manhunt 2 was temporarily suspended when Rockstar submitted its revised version of the game recently.

Once again, though, Rockstar got a no.

The BBFC's statement on the original version stated that the game was not given a classification because of its "unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone," which banned it from UK store shelves.

Upon rejecting the new toned-down version, the BBFC's director, David Cooke, issued this statement: "The impact of the revisions on the bleakness and callousness of tone, or the essential nature of the gameplay, is clearly insufficient. There has been a reduction in the visual detail in some of the 'execution kills,' but in others, they retain their original visceral and casually sadistic nature."

Cooke also stated that the board had made suggestions as to what should be changed about the game, but the suggestions were ignored. Rockstar has the right to appeal this decision along with the first one, though at the time has made no comments about its plans.

The game has presumably been banned on two platforms - Sony's Playstaion 2 and Nintendo's Wii, though a PSP version is also planned.

Oh for crying out loud.

While we're at it, lets ban the Saw movies.

This whole thing just flat out idiotic. It's kinda ironic at the end of the day to see America having more common sense, seeing as the ban was lifted there.

I'd love to know what exactly is so ultra-horrible about this game that makes it so dangerous to the public. Especially considering what other gratuitous violence is already up for sale.

Is it honestly *that* bad?

Yes, because this isn't going to tempt more people into buying from somewhere else, JUST because it has had this much publicity.
People are now interested in EXACTLY what was wrong with the game, and are now going to buy it.

Im right now, doing a study into the effects of violent video games in society today, this will prove a very usefull peice of information.

Well, I just got done checking out the Manhunt 2 official website. Nothing I found there seemed out of the ordinary when it comes to games of it's genre. It was freaky, gruesome, bloody, and dark.

^ The game's site, should anyone else care to check it out.

When I get some time, I'm going to try to dig up some more stuff on the original version. This story is something I'm pretty interested in, so I'm going to continue to follow it. I'll post up anything else I happen to find.

Remember the manhunt 1 ban in the UK?

I think someone who strongly felt that the game contributed to a death has some power in this ban of manhunt 2, and probably is not willing to let that go without a fight.

I'll just import the uncut one from Holland.

Nice, simple solution.
