"Nothing as big as Halo 3 this year", admits Kim

Newly promoted Microsoft entertainment business development VP Shane Kim has admitted that there’s nothing in the firm’s 360 line-up this year that is likely to top Halo 3 in terms of size and popularity.

But he's still optimistic.

“I think the platform is just as strong, if not stronger [than last year],” he told Next-Gen. “That’s hard to say, because we had incredible titles last year with BioShock, Halo 3, Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4. … Especially when you look at Halo 3, which was a phenomenal industry event, it’s easy to look back and go ‘you can’t possibly be as strong.’

“But if you look at the initial success of Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360, that’s been super, and we have exclusive [DLC] content coming too. Gears of War 2 is going to be huge, Fable 2 is going to be huge.

“So I don’t know. I believe that we’re going to have just as big of a year in terms of content on Xbox 360. Maybe we don’t have a particular exclusive that’s as big as Halo 3, but I do think that Gears 2 and Fable 2 will be really big hits.”

This is no great shock. I don't think any gamers in their right
minds honestly expected the monumental sort of releases the
industry enjoyed last year. You just don't throw great titles
like Halo 3, Bioshock, COD4, and so on together overnight.
I think most gamers would share my opinion that I don't
expect the kind of greatness we enjoyed last year. But,
we would be willing to settle for a whole hell of a lot of
good.

I bet 2009 will be a repeat of 2007 in terms of triple A titles,
though. Now, just give me my Fable 2 and nobody gets
hurt.
