Gamers out there will have something to add to their letters to Santa this holiday season as it has been officially announced that the 40-GB model of the PS3 will be available at the end of October for around $400 and will come with a Blu-Ray copy of Spider-Man 3.
However the price drop also includes some cutbacks to the system as well. These cutbacks include reducing the number of USB ports to two and removal of slots for memory cards and backwards compatibility.
For those who want all those features, be ready to shell out an extra $100 as the full featured 80-GB model will be available for around $500.
Hopefully this should boost PS3 sales which despite the hype have been a bit lacking as of late. Still a $400 price tag for a somewhat better basic model might not have people rushing through the electronics department. This is especially true for the $500 model although a $100 price cut from the previous model is an improvement. It might not be enough to encourage gamers out there to practically hand over their wallets.
The price drop does show that Sony is ready to compete, especially during the holiday shopping season, especially for the biggest shopping day on the calender.
Hopefully after the madness of the holiday season, Sony will be ready to announce a second price drop which would give gamers more reason to fork over their hard earned cash.

100 less, but no backward compatability, less USB holes, and half the hard drive space? Um.... This is no deal at all.
Sony... *sighs*
Maybe if it had backwards compatability - not like I'd buy a PS3 for PS2 games, of course. However I wouldn't buy it for PS3 games either.
So, meh. Not a great solution yet. |

I don't even own a PS3, and I still feel a little abused by this news.
No backward compatibility? 2 less USB ports? When and IF I ever pick
up a PS3, I'll just pick up one of the 60 gig models, even if I have to
go to Ebay to get it. |

Here's hoping for another price cut.
Come on SONY, your getting on the right tracks-ish.
Another price cut and bring back BC! |

I like BC thankyou very much, I would rather them have kept that, it would have made me think of buying one,
Sony are just screwing themselves over, bit by bit. They may think it will sell more PS3 games by removing it, but they are sadly SADLY WRONG. |
