Surgeons praise Wii

A recent US study shows playing computer games particularly on the Nintendo Wii can help improve a surgeon's performance in the operating theatre.

Wii games that require delicate movements with the Wii remote are said to be the most effective. The control required to play these games acts as a warm up before surgeons have to perform similar movements later on a patients body.

Scientist's are now believed to be designing software for the Wii that will accurately simulate surgical procedures.

According to the study, those that played the Wii scored nearly 50% higher on tool control and overall performance than other trainees.

Researchers explain "the whole point about surgery is to execute small finely controlled movements with your hands, and that is exactly what you get with the Wii." It is hoped that the games console and new software could be used to train surgeons in poorer countries where cutting-edge virtual reality systems were not available.

The US researchers will present their work at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference in California later in January.

Honestly. I find that all a bit hard to swallow.

Then again, you'd be amazed with what some some surveys say...

a bit sick of all this Wii rubbish - course it can be done on a wii - very badly... Im sure if sony were to try and bring out a "sony remote" it would be miles better and will practically end the wii era...

Anyway the stuff they already use to train up surgeons is miles better but i can see the point of giving a wii to poorer countries to train surgeons however crazy that sounds...

but for the first time we now have the surgeons on the video game side, all thats left is the stinking politicians...

I don't know. It kind of makes sense that warming up always helps your
performance, regardless of the activity. I bet you it won't be too long before
some survey claims that men who shake the Wii remote for a couple of minutes
beforehand are better able to administer self love.
