Sony in denial; denies interest in exclusive games

In what can only be considered a temporary bout of amnesia on Sony's part, Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton has come forward and denied the company's interest in exclusitivity, conveniently in light of the fact that the once industry leader is losing most of it's PS3 exclusive titles.

In an outburt of fanboyism, VGC shall delve into Tretton's recent interview in English gaming magazine PSM, and pick apart the contradictions of a company that is desperately trying to save face.

"Microsoft is too dependent upon the third-party community, and Nintendo is too dependent upon first-party," he told the magazine, "We like to feel that we got a pretty good mix.

""We have a very different approach to exclusives than some of our competitors. We don't buy exclusivity. We don't fund development. We don't, for lack of a better term, bribe somebody to only do a game on our platform."

Whilst Microsoft and Nintendo, openly aware that they are targetting two different markets, have peacefully accepted each other's existance, Sony seems to believe that their own course of action is to deride the competition, whilst apparently being oblivious to the real reason companies are refusing to go exclusive and dropping the exclusivity of previous titles (DMC3, Beautiful Katamari, etc.); not enough people are buying PS3s, and the companies aren't going to support the weakest format on the shelves.

"We earn it by saying, 'You can build a better game on our platform. If you focus your development on our platform, you will ultimately be more successful," Tretton continued, "We can try to partner up with you from a technology standpoint. We can try to partner up with you from a marketing standpoint. But just economically and technologically, this is the system that makes the most sense for you."

The problem with this generation, that a publisher's title will not be more successful on the PS3, because there simply are not enough people busying the console. Playstation consoles have also been famously difficult to develope for due to their shoddy technological construction. As such, developers are bringing their games to the 360 (and to a lesser extent, the Wii) for the ery reasons Sony claims is their approach.

Sony are slowly attempting to correct third party developers biggest problems with the PS3, bad development tools and a price range that is alienating customers. Sony have begun to provide first party developement tools to 3rd party developers for the first time in the company's history, and a significant price drop for the console is expected before the Christmas season.

Lets hope it's enough.

However expensive they are, and however sparse the games are, I'm still getting one.

I mean, someone's gotta buy 'em, Eh?

Someone has to feel sorry for them, I guess.

I'm not going to pitybuy. With the money I'd spend on a PS3, I can buy HOW many other games?

I'm not pity buying. I'm buying for Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm.

Sam, you become my personal hero just a little more every day.

I will be buying one eventually as well. I don't wish failure for Sony. I'd hate
to see any of the big three go down, as I believe competition inevitably makes
for better games. I do think Sony needs to get its head out of its collective
ass and stop trying to throw their weight around and expect everyone else
to snap to and obey. While I do think Sony's inability to move the PS3 is
largely due to its price point, which is prohibitive for a lot of gamers, yours
truly included, I don't think it's really an outrageous amount when you
consider everything you're getting with the system.

If Sony does indeed drop the price significantly ($100 at least), I can see
the PS3 enjoying brisk sales this holiday season. Couple that with the
upcoming game release schedule, and I think the system could possibly correct Sony's course. I believe the effects a price drop would have for Sony is a bit of a concern, though, as they're already taking a hit on every console sold at the current price. Granted, its less of a hit now that the Blu-ray lasers are considerably cheaper to produce, but they're still eating it nonetheless on every PS3. Can Sony afford a price reduction?

I always did wonder why the Playstation got all the better games. But at least now the playing field is being evened out a bit.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna buy the PS3 yet. I'm happy playing games on my Wii, but when the price eventually drops, then maybe I'll buy one. At the moment, I'm more inclined towards buying a PS2, because they're extremely cheap, and a lot of the games are freaking awesome-sauce.

To be honest, PS3 is looking more and more like a dead console to me with everyday that passes. It had potential, and from a technology standpoint it could have some fantastic games. However, no support from developers = low sales which leads to less support from developers in the spiral of PS3's death. Short of a miracle (or some incredible games) I doubt I'll be buying one.

But why would you buy a console for a pretty-good-but-far-from-awesome FPS game and a so-and-so off-road racer? O_o

I'm not sure about Resistance myself, but Motorstorm is one of the few games that I actually want to buy the system for... when it goes down in price, of course.

Different tastes, and all that. There are worse games out there.

Well okay, I'll admit that Motorstorm is actually good, but Excite Truck upstages it in my opinion, and Colin McRae Dirt outperforms it in a different way as well. But even leaving those two games aside, Motorstorm doesn't actually bring anything new to the genre, and the graphics are far from what we were promised in the trailer two E3s ago.

Fun arcade racer, sure. But not exactly a system seller in my opinion.

why buy a PS3?

for the money I would put into one, I could buy either:
3 controller sets for my Wii with and 8 games and a wireless Wii Bar.

or:

my friends xb360(for 200 with 4 controllers and 2 charger wire thingies) and 8 games. or 7 games and a year of XBL. or 6 and 2 years. (either combo with XBL is fine and dandy in my eyes)

and why would I want to fuel a company that made a bad business decision, and IMO never really made any good ones after the original Playstation came out? (as far as the videogame industry goes. I can't complain about their other entertainment systems. and I know thats just an opinion, but I never really found a reason to buy anything from Sony after the original PS.)

if they were cheaper (price of an xb360?) I might consider buying one. so if they actually last long enough for a price drop, I might consider just because some games look like they'd be fun, but im not dropping $600 + money for the game I want.

Points I agree with fully, pyro - of course I'm not going to go out and SPEND all that money, saving will be better, but you're right, if one had to choose the logical choice would not be the PS3.

And might I add I still use my perfectly functioning PS and PS controllers, purchased when they came out.

yay!
the PS was good, and thats about it. I never saw a reason to buy a PS2 because:

A) I figured out how to put together a bootdisc that flashes the BIOS of my Xbox to PS2's, and launches the PS2 dashboard (bigger HDD, on a special partition set aside. same setup with the GameCube) and I have a magicbox (converts PS2, GC xbox and DreamCast controllers into the other systems input. and no I can't write a tutorial on that its modifying closed-sourced software. legal as long as I don't show others how to do it and I don't gain any personal profit off it or use it in a non-personal way)

B)I could borrow a friends.

I had a PS1 (the white portable one) for a while, but it just stopped working randomly. think the power cable broke but I was too damn lazy to screw with it.

After spying the 360 Elite (and the associated £300-320 pricetag) I've reconsidered. Also, I played the Halo 3 beta in gamestation. And, I've played Gears of War. And ninety-nine nights. I could go on. If I really want to play Motorstorm, or Resistance, I'll wait until a friend gets a PS3.

I was going to get a new PC, but there's too much capacity for problems, and I can't be arsed to update it every year. All I'd use it for is games and music, and the odd DVD. The 360 suits me fine for that.
