Sebastian: No PS3 price cut expected this year

Lazard Capital's Colin Sebastian announced this morning that while he expects a 360 price drop this year in the $50 region, a PS3 cut isn't likely to happen.

"We continue to expect Xbox 360 price cuts this year (~$50 reduction), while Sony appears content to focus on achieving PlayStation profitability at the current PS3 price points," the analyst said in a note ahead of the May NPD data this week.

Sebastian said last month that he didn't expect to see a drop on PS3 in the US in 2008, with this new statement being a reiteration of the message a month previous.

Should the PS3 receive a price cut? Would it give you more incentive to buy the machine?

To put it bluntly... Yes. <_<

Backwards compatibility on all models would be nice too.

The price barrier issue really isn't what it used to be. The 40 gig is cheaper then the 360's elite model. So why not point to price on elites? I did fully expect them not drop the price because if you keep on dropping the price then Sony will way to much. It's all about content, perception, and hardware. Sony just needs to iterate what the PS3 can do. The Blu-Ray, Location free player, PSN, Backwards Compatibility, and game selection are all things they need to push harder.

I think a lot of people brushed off the PS3 in the early months and those people need to be educated in what the PS3 has available.

Tbh, I'm really starting to wonder if I'm gonna get a PS3. It just seems that the Xbox and the Wii have more to deliver but also cost less. I know the PS3 is a decent machine and I'm ususally a Sony loyalist but it's not so easy these days.

Meh, I guess we'll see.

Because the Elite is the advanced model of the 360, with a a 120GB hard-drive and guaranteed HDMI, and the 40GB PS3 is a striped down model that doesn't even support backward compatibility - which is SOFTWARE DRIVEN in the PAL model and doesn't cost anything to include - in order to force the serious gamers that want to bring their games into the next generation to have to but the more experienced model.

It's spitting on the faces of the people who built the brand up to what it was in the first place.

Because you're comparing the advanced model of the 360 (when the standard model works just fined) the the most basic model of the PS3.

They'll sop brushing it off when it's at a price that the standard consumer can afford, and has more than a handful of exclusives worth buying.

Honestly, do you get rid of your last gen console when you get a next gen one? Do most people? Didn't thing so.

We got rid of our xbox when we got a 360. I'll sell my PS2 (and a majority of the games) when I get a PS3. It's just easier and it reduces clutter. Everybody I know has the same mindset.
