PSP redesign - Yes, no and maybe

Bringing new meaning to the word "fickle", Sony both comfirm and deny plans for a redesigned version of PSP... on the same day!SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire was the one to reveal the truth(?) at yesterday's 'PSP in Education initiative' conference.

Maguire expressly stated that no design changes would be made to the size of PSP's screen, which is "fixed". A general reduction to the size and weight of the haldheld in planned, but no specific details were given, nor Maguire wouldn't offer any details on when the redesign would be revealed.

Of course, console redesign are nothing new for Sony. The PS-X recieved a makeover in 2000, and redubbed as PSone, and the slim-line PS2 hits stores four years after the PlayStation 2 first launched.

After the conference though, a Sony spokesperson expressly told GamesIndustry.biz that there aren't any "immediate changes" planned for the PSP beyond regular firmware updates, "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development, and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."

Will they? Won't they? Have they? As is usually the case with Sony, it's always hard to tell. You're going to have to make your own minds up about this one.

PSP Lite? :P

I wouldn't mind seeing a smaller portable console. The PSP as it is isn't an unreasonable size but these days "smaller is taller" kind of sense. Consoles are not just machines to use for entertainment--they've also become statements of style. And while I don't care for it for that reason, I do know that a great many do.

The PSP slim doesnt seem to load anything faster, and from what I can tell, the battery doesnt last as long.
There are 3 people with fats, and 2 with slims, they always seem to have the most charging problems, and I've noticed that their games always load a little slower, although the higher cache should have fixed that.
