Although it should come as no surprise that the recent slim-line redesign of Sony's handheld saw sales of the machine increase, the changes were cleared loved by gamers the world over, and it's the reason why that are worth looking at in more detail.

Sales of the PSP recently have been lacklustre at best, with the handheld only pushing 15,564 units in Japan in the week of September 3rd - 9th. Sales of the PSP spiked by a massive 600% the week after though, shifting 95,487 for the week, due the release the hugely anticipated Final Fantasy VII prequel, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.

As well as being able to buy the title by itself, Crisis Core also came as part of a bundle pack that included the redesigned PSP Slim, and a limited edition 10th Aniversary version of the game. This was the only way to get your hands on the PSP Slim before the official September 20th launch.

The release of the redesigned PlayStation Portable Slim, which is 33% lighter, 16% smaller, and boasts a video in port for connecting to a TV screen, has proven to be a stellar success since its launch, with first week sales hitting the 250,702 mark, according to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain Inc's recent reports.

As of September 23rd, the PSP Slim has shifted 326,645 units in the and of the rising sun. 75,943 of these units have been attributed to the Crisis Core bundle package.

Whilst the PS3 continues to lag behind other console formats on the market, its definately refreshing to see the PSP in good health and going strong.

Yay, I'm glad that Sony made a move that's proved to be effective for them. I probably won't buy a PSP Slim, but I will oogle over it. *laughs*
