PSP Skype coming later this month

Though it's already known that a special version of Skype will be released for the Sony PSP, Sony confirms today that it will be coming to us as early as the end of this month.

Sony has officially announced that due to a Sony-Skype partnership, Skype functionality will be available for the PSP as early as the end of this month.

The Skype feature will allow PSP users to voice and text chat, PSP to PSP, PSP to PC, or purchase a phone number to call landlines for about $21.00(USD) for 3 months of usage.

But this new Skype feature will be limited to PSP-Slim owners only, a disappointment to the original "fat" PSP owners no doubt.

PSP Slim users will be able to use Skype by simply updating their firmware. Purchasing a specially made PSP mic will also be required to make use of the voice functions.

This sucks, I see no reason why the slim can do it and the "fat" can't.

Except Sony trying to force people to upgrade...

Upgrade something that's basically dead? No way. This is stupid. I thought Sony had a good idea for once.... why can't it work on the regular PSP? Ugh.

Man, I had such geek wood for this, and now I've been let down horribly.
Sony is such a c*ck tease. I am not going to trade for a slim. I don't even
play the one I've got. Talk about no effing games. Damn.

may drag in a few people... but only a few.... no one will surely trade theirs in unless its a straight 1-1 swap..

Raiden, are you sure this only works on the PSP Slim? Both machines are practically identical in construction.

Yes, slim-only. I'm guessing its because the original PSP's have 32MB of RAM, and the Slims are upgraded to 64MB..... Giving it more power to run bigger programs.

Also, a quick google search for "PSP RAM" brought up this site, which pretty much agrees what I was thinking. I wouldn't consider them a reliable source, but just something that backs up what I was thinking.

I've seen a program you can run on cracked PSPs that'll run Skype on any PSP...

Dunno how well it works, but it's meant to be good.

Looks like Sony are just plain cocks...
