Harsh. *laughs* Personally, I like the achievements system. These are nice additions, but hardly life changing. |

Sony has an older demographic to begin with. People on the PSN aren't as concerned with their "gamer score" as they are with a top-notch entertainment system. I was a bit dissapointed that the trophies came about at all... Unless this unlocks something extra for me.. I'm not sure exactly what the hell I'm supposed to do with this uber-competitive bull****. I can't remember a time when an achievement enhanced my gaming experience... If people on psn need to feel better about themselves that badly they should just wait until sony implements the youtube uploading functionality they have been working on. Then you have ACTUAL PROOF of something cool you did. Rather than show off some achievement-type gloat trophy that means absolutely NOTHING. But in-game XMB! that sounds like a deal. If that is released now it would make sense as HOME is available to everyone this fall in the form of an open beta. ... kinda debunks your 2016 prediction by about 8 sarcastic years. |

That's a rather derogatory simplification Manic. There's no figures to suggest to that either console has an older demographic, but a large portion of the Xbox 360 fanbase comes from the PC market, which is generally older anyway. Added to that, many of the games (especially those originating from Japan) are geared heavily at the teenage market. Not does disliking things such as gamerscores, achievements and trophies somehow make someone a more mature gamer. Clearly, there are a lot of gamers who enjoy them; gaming is a competitive medium, and people like to have these "badges" to show off the achievements they've made. You might not care, but I would be impressed to see someone with an achievement for say, completing Devil May Cry on Dante Must Die mode. And unlike the PS3, you can't just download saves and cheat. It meant to be competitive in a friendly fashion, and if someone is acting otherwise, they're the problem, not the system itself.
How is having the achievement right there in the person's profile not proof? Console bias is not something the general VGC memberbase is known for having. Lets not try to make it a commonality. |

In fact there are multiple demographic based studies on the 3 current next gen consoles. One recent example would be: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/new-study-compares-360-ps3-consumers/"]http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/new-study-compares-360-ps3-consumers/ To say there are "no figures" would imply that companies don't do their market reseach. I think we both agree that the wii targets younger consumers than the other two consoles as part of their strategy. I can't count the number of times I ran into some 13 year old who just learned to swear on his mic in a Halo 3 match wanting to compare gamerscores... but to be fair I have also encountered the same on the PSN, at a much lower frequency(and obviously without the gamerscore issue). This may be just because parents don't want to spend more $$ on a console for their adolescant child.. but either way, I've seen it much less on the PS3. Perhaps this jaded me. After-all I gave (yes gave) my 360 to my younger brother as a gift when I made the transition. I also miss many features of the 360 (friends on xbox live included). I have shifted my focus to the ps3 as a result of many MANY failures/issues/ shortcomings I found with the 360. This has formed my opinion to the way it is. It may be jaded, it may be mostly exclusive, but it is NOT without consideration of the 360 by any means. I'm also pretty sure I'm allowed to have an opinion based on forum rules. and on that note.. I should also apologize for the way I wrote my previous post. I should have made my point clearer .. cuz it did come off a little ..... dick. I would be more likely to appreciate a clip of someone beating a section of Devil may cry on Dante must die mode then watch them compare their gamerscore against mine. And honestly, I rarely saw these achievements being compared on a mature level ever. If anything, achievents are a system that urges players to play any/all games despite their opinion. It encourages debacles such as Iron Man to be sold at all. If not... then even the friendly comparison of achievements is out the window... because if you are playing games based on your opinion then you don't have to worry about the score and achievements thus making them obsolete when comparing them to one another. How can one compete if they can only obtain achievements on the particular games they like? ... again. This is only MY opinion and I am voicing it as one angle on the subject for others to consider.. and not to adhere as their own by any means. I would reccomend anyone do the research themselves and obtain their own opinion first. Michael, it would appear we happen to disagree on this particular issue. Sorry if this came off as blunt in any way... I just wanted to be clear about how I feel. I would expect the same from our other members as well as that is how we get an undestandin of opinions as a whole, despite how unhappy someone may be with something. I happen to be unhappy with "trophies" potentially being added to the PS3 in an effort to match Xbox live somehow. Maybe they will be used in a different way. I hope they will. |

I would like to chime in. :) I like the addition of Trophys. I think it's fun little system where you can compete with your friends or others to say how good you are. This does not imply that I put achievement whores and casual players on the same level. For anyone who have played Super Smash Bros Melee or Brawl will know, collecting trophys in that game really gets you nothing. It is a collectors attitude that trys to get them all. If someone is so inclined to get that then so be it. It's not changing my experience or does not detract from single player gameplay. Multiplayer achievements can defiantly screw up a good game. This is most the developers fault for making achievements that encourage certain behavior. This isn't always true but is true sometimes none the less. In the end though bad experiences will happen online. Thats the nature of online. Not every game with everyone else will be pleasant, fun, or good. Like I said it's no different then competitions at arcades or at home in the past when most games were about scores and clear times. Now that gaming have evolved into a much more diverse medium these achievements and trophys intend to allow users to experience competitive game playing outside of actually going online, enlisting in tournaments, or otherwise playing old games. Also Sony has posted two videos showing what will change with 2.40 and how the work. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/35681.html"]In game XMB Pt. 1 http://www.gametrailers.com/player/35684.html"]Trophys Pt. 2 |

The official release date for open beta is Winter of 08. If they do hit that, it'd be nice. | |||
