GameStop confirms discontinuation of 80GB PS3

The last few weeks have been full of rumours in regards to the possible discontinuation of 80GB SKU from retailers worldwide. Today, GameStop reveals some concrete information which will hopefully bring this whole convoluted mess to a close.

GameStop held a company-wide conference call today to discuss the matter directly. The call confirmed that Sony will be discontinuing the 80GB model. Speculation suggests that a 120GB (or possibly more) model will eventually be made available. However, Sony have yet to openly confirm any actual plans to discontinue the 80GB, which is making the facts a lot more complicated than they really need to be.

There's no news yet as to when this upgraded version will be made available to retailers and consumers alike, though it's seeming increasingly likely that the new SKU will include the highly anticipated DualShock 3. The DualShock 3 is currently only available in Japan, so this will mark it as a worldwide release.

More solid information is expected at the Games Developer Conference, but we'll let you know of something more substantial breaks beforehand.

I am really jonesing to get a PS3. I was just talking with a guy down at
GameXchange who said the 80 gig, with a patch, is backward compatible.
I did not know that. I'd rather have the 40 gig model, though, for cost
reasons. I don't really download a bunch of stuff.

My 360 has the 20 gig drive, and it's only ever half full most of the time.
I tend to delete demos and such fairly quickly.

Yes, the 80GB model is backwardly compatible.

It's also insanely overpriced.

Is that much money worth the backward compatibility? That's the question you need to ask yourself first.

A PS3 with 120GB probably won't sell any better. *sigh* Oh, Sony.... I wish they would stop messing with versions of consoles and work on that whole GAME issue.

The 80 GB is a good deal since you get BC and a copy of Motorstorm. However, Sony needs to just stick with it and stop throwing out so many multiple SKUs. It's not really telling the consumer that Sony has that much confidence in their own product.
