With Christmas looming ever closer, higher console sales shouldn't really come as any surprise. What may come as a surprise though, are the figures.
Video Game Chat takes a closer look at how each of the Big Three are fairing for the holiday season. Sony are put under the microscope for this report.
SONY
The PlayStation 3 has suffered a rather turbulent start - nobody would deny this - but it seems like things are finally starting to look up for the lagging console.
Thanks to the
PS3's recent price cut, average sales of the console have almost doubled, and the recent Thanksgiving sales boom has seen those sales almost triple during the holiday week.
The increasing popularity of the Blu-ray format, and the existence of actual decent exclusives (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune) can also be attributed to an increase in sales.
In total, an estimated 321,000+ PS3s were sold in November in North America, compared to the average 200,000 or so PS3 consoles that ship monthly. In total, the machine sold around 150,000 units during the Black Friday shopping week.
Sales figures for the PSP have been strangely quiet, although the hand-held did have a
fairly impressive September month, so it's unlikely the console is doing poorly.

We don't have any reserves available for the PSP in our book past a certain time next year. I don't know what that implies.
I'm very happy the PS3 is picking up - I was hating pretty bad on them until now. Don't forget that they halved the development costs for their games. I can definitely see the following year being far better for them. I've been advising people who have been interested to pick up the PS3 next year, and I think they will be happy to get it. |

However far behind Microsoft Sony are, this is promising for the console. It will provide a small boost to Sony's economy, and hopefully will end with the PS3 actually getting some decent games. |

Well, looks like Sony's having a wee bit of luck. The price cut was probably the deciding factor--I can tell you I wasn't even considering buying it while it was that high but now that it's come down I might get it.
Still have a ways to go, IMO. |
