40GB PS3 rumoured to hit US stores November 2nd

Only a few days ago, the heavily rumoured 40GB PS3 was unveiled by Sony in the UK, with no mention of plans to release it in other territories. Today though, the Hollywood Reporter reported that the 40GB PS3 will be hitting US and Canadian shores as early as November 2nd.

This striped down PS3 model, which lacks PS2 backward compatibility, two of four USB ports, and the multi memory card port, will soon be hitting American and Canadian shores, if reports from the Hollywood Report are to be believe, who claimed the 40GB PS3 would hit the region in the coming weeks, and have quoted an "industry source" as saying, "We're hearing November 2" and confirmed the date with a "buyer for a major game retailer."

The 40GB model will retail at $399, a massive $200 cheaper than the current 80GB PS3. The short lived 60GB PS3 has already been discontinued.

Alas, we knew him not, because these ridiculous price swapping games are doing nothing to gain the interest of consumers who are already disinterested enough.

This current gimmick is an even bigger slap in the face to the already established 100 million plus PS2 userbase, who will be forced to pay an extra $200 just to bring their existing games collection into the next generation, or buy a striped down, vastly inferior model that lacks a number of major features... and still have few worthwhile games. Please PS3, we beg of you, just give us some good games, and we'll actually go out and buy you! That's all we want from you.

Of course, this is still just a rumour until such time as Sony confirms any truth to the story, but VGC rarely likes to indulge in unsubstantiated rumours to report its news though, and such an influential and trustworthy source as the Hollywood Reporter is not known for spreading idle gossip, so it's about as reliable a source as you can get.

As always, we'll keep you posted when we find out more.

Let me paraphrase myself in every news story about Sony fucking up with marketing and sales:

This company had a really great thing, and I respected them; and it wasn't even the crappy expense of the PS3 that made me dislike them. But it's how they handle everything around that console. No big exclusive titles, and attempts to cut costs that end up cheating the customer. Those things are WORSE than a pricey machine, and they'll bury the company.

Sorry, somewhat distracted by the Red PS3 ad because it looks very cool :). Anyway, I think Corrine hit it on the head, more or less, besides the 360's $399 model has just about what you need anyway. I honestly think the person who has been doing the pricing as well as hardware divisions is on drugs and the more Sony talks the more I want to hire snipers to shut them up. I love my PS2 and Sony's good decisions on that but it seems like they are making every mistake Microsoft made with the original X-Box, how about those apples of irony?

I've always had a thing against Sony, they are one of the most "evil" companies out there, especialy the music section. And this PS3 fiasco has made it worse.

It's just a shame they get some damn good games and have two of my must buys as exclusives.
