E3 2008: Grand Theft Auto announced for Nintendo DS

Earlier on, Nintendo made a surprise announcement for a new DS game.

Shockingly, it's Grand Theft Auto.

You can shut your gaping mouths now.

Called GTA: China town, it is set in Liberty city, and apparently will feature the same freeroaming fun that the other GTA's have currently made themselves famous with.

No release date has currently been announced though I assume it will be out either late this year or early next year.

More news when we get it.

Who can honestly say they saw this coming? I sure as hell didn't. It does seem like Nintendo has now realised they have to do something about their reputation as a "kiddie company". But hey, that just means more games for us and that's not a bad thing. ;)

This was a pretty cool announcement, I'd rather see it on the PSP though, purely because that would allow a link up between it and GTAIV

We're probably gonna have to prepare ourselves for yet another backlash of "VIDEOGAMES ARE EVIL AND MADE MY CHILD STAB HIS FRIEND" from parents because they couldn't be bothered to pay attention enough not to buy their 10 year old and 18+ game because they assumed that all the games were like Pokemon. >_>

I'm just saying.

I often wonder if parents like that actually care about what their kids do and play. They don't have to show an interest in gaming itself, but they should at least be able to understand what kids should and should not play.

This was certainly unexpected, that's for sure.

We'll have to wait and see if its actually any good though.

Page is up on Rockstar's website, btw. Rockstar Leeds (the two PSP GTA's) is heading up development, with some members from Rockstar North.

Yes, but this isn't just a weak overhead rehash.

It'll be an original 3D title exclusive to the handheld.

And there was me thinking that the shocking part was GTA on a nintendo console.
