E3 2007: Konami on PS3 price-cut; considering multi-format MGS4

UPDATE: MGS4 E3 2007 VIDEO TRAILER! <-- click to view details

You're probably tired of hearing about the PS3's price-cut from $600 to $500 earlier yesterday, and it seems that developers and publishers are just as underwhelmed as the consumer; MGS4 developers Konami have their doubt doubts, and are already considering bringing the franchise to other consoles.

Although some analyst are crazy enough to believe that the PS3 price-drop could potentially double the PS3's sale and put Microsoft in a very competitive situation, even Konami, one of the PS3's strongest supporters, doesn't believe it will have a significant impact.

Speaking with Reuters recently, Konami's North American and European operations head Kazumi Kitaue expressed his only personal doubt about Sony's decision, "I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100," Kitaue stated, "I don't expect a substantial impact...With $500, you can buy a personal computer."

Of course it would stand to reason that Konami would want the PS3 to become the leading console on the market, seeing as one of the most hotly anticipated titles of the year, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is due for release exclusively on the machine.

Whether it's going to remain an exclusive or not, is another question, as the company seems to be well aware of the consumer's lack of interest in the PS3. Kitaue believes that Konami may just have to bring the series to non-Sony systems, just to make it's development costs back, never mind earning a profit from a title.

"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game," Kitaue said. "But we might have to take some steps."

Wasn't MGS already on other systems? I remember renting one of them for the GC...

...Anywho, I agree. the $100 pricedrop isn't going to be enough to convince the people who don't have one already to buy one. Some maybe, but not everyone.

Sony is taking a hell of a beating here, but it seems they're underestimating how bad a position they're in.

You'd think price matching the Xbox with the lure of MGS4 would garner them more success, but it seems the damage is already done.

They need to do something drastic to restore developer and consumer faith

Edit: Twin Snakes was a MGS1 remake for the Game Cube, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance was released on the Xbox and PC as well as the PS2. The original MGS was ported to the PC, also.

I really hope they bring MGS4 to the Wii. Some people may think it wouldnt work well on the wii because of the control system, but after playing splinter cell double agent on the wii (which has similar controls to MGS), I can definately say it would be awesome.
