For the first time in a year, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console outsold all its competitors. Due to the phenomenal smash hit game Halo 3, Microsoft's problem ridden boxes moved 527,000 units in the month of September, making it the system's best month since launch.
Nintendo held its own, however, as its Wii console sold 501K units, and its now ubiquitous DS Lite selling 496K. Sony, as has been the case all along during this hardware generation, came in third, with sales of the PSP totalling 285K, the PS2 still going strong at 215K, and the PS3 lagging bady behind at 119K units sold.
It seems as though those who were holding out for Halo 3 before picking up a 360 came out in droves to drive sales of Microsoft's red ringing machine of infamy to the top of the charts.
In addition to moving hardware, Halo 3 took the top three spots in game sales as well, with the regular edition coming in first, followed by the limited in second, and the $129 Legendary edition taking spot number 3.
Microsoft has had a good month, to be sure, but once the Halo hoopla dies down, how will it fare? With games like Mass Effect, Rock Band, Guitar Hero III, and GTAIV on the horizon, I'd say probably very well.

Even with the red ring problem, games like these, not to mention the plenty already out, really are too tastey to pass up. I wish I could afford it, and by that I'm including the time to play it. One day, maybe! |
